Endicott, New York is a small town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1792 by settlers from Connecticut and Rhode Island. In 1812, Endicott received its incorporation as a village. Endicott was named for Benjamin Ezra Endicott (1762-1837), an American statesman and member of the United States Senate from Massachusetts. In 1846, Wappingers Falls Bridge was built over the Niagara River between Endicott and Seneca Lake to provide an easier access to the falls for visitors and locals living on either side of the river. The bridge became known as "the Golden Gate of America" because it connected two major tourist destinations in Western New York: Niagara Falls and Wappingers Falls. In 1870,Endicott had a railroad station with three tracks that served as a junction for several lines crossing the river near present-day Seneca Lake Boulevard and Route 9A before being closed down due to financial difficulties. In 1899, EndicOTT joined with other villages in westchester county to form what would become Erie County; however, this merger never took place due to differences over land titles within Erie County's borders. endicutte
In 1815, the town of Endicott was laid out by Nicholas-Jacques de Montresor and purchased from the Mohawk Indians. The first settler in Endicott was Daniel Proctor. In 1825, another settler, Moses Weems, arrived. Two years later, John Morse arrived to drill for oil wells in what is now known as Morse Township. By 1830, endicott had a population of around 100 people. The first post office in Endicott was established in 1832. That year saw the founding of the local school board and first printing press in town. In 1837, Endicott became part of Albany County and began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to New York City and its burgeoning trade industry. In 1840, the county seat was moved to Albany and endicott became an incorporated village with a population of over 200 people. During this time period there were several significant buildings constructed in or near EndicOTTOWN: Trinity Episcopal Church (1840), State Theatre (1845), Alexander Hamilton High School (1847), The Globe Coffee House (1848), Masonic Lodge No. 2 (1849), Poultney Male Seminary (1850), and Aiken Academy (1851). By 1865, when Albany County broke up into multiple districts,Endicott had shrunk back to its original size with a population of only 508 people living on five square miles.(according to Census records)
