Elmira is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Onondaga, NY-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in present-day Elmira was Nicholas Davenport who arrived in 1788 and built a cabin on the east side of what is now Main Street. The town began to form around 1800 when other early settlers erected cabins and started trading with nearby villages. In 1807, Elmira became an incorporated village under the name of Clintonville. After being renamed Elmira in 1836 as a result of its location near Mohawk Lake (now Erie Canal), the village grew rapidly until it attained its current size by 1870. The township of Schuyler was created from portions of Clintonville in 1837 and gradually annexed parts of Elmira until all but one block were annexed by Schuyler in 1907. That year, both towns merged into one Municipality under the name "Elmira". On January 1, 1923, Elmira withdrew from schuyler county and formed its own independent municipality located within upon reactivation of redefined boundaries following World War II which had taken place at various points throughout the county during that time period; this municipally based government continued until 1997 when it reverted back to Schuyler County control effective January 1st pending referendum approval for statewide consolidation which took place on November 3rd 1998 resulting in an enlarged Elmira with more than 2/3ths of its current population living within its borders Today's downtown core - centered around Main Street and State Street - has been completely renovated since 2005 as part of a $30 million dollar renovation project spearheaded by Mayor Rick Saccone & Deputy Mayor Barbara Lynch Census Data: Population density (people per square mile): 2,344 (2011) Median Household Income: $64,512 (2011) Unemployment Rate*: 7%*(2013)* *Unemployment rate includes people working less than half their hours or not working at all

Elmira was founded in 1785 by Peter Minuit and his wife Deborah. The town became a center for the fur trade and served as the capital of New York from 1795 to 1800. After Polk's death in 1846, Elmira reverted back to its original name and declined in importance until it regained some stature during the 1960s when it became an industrial center due to its heavy reliance on plastics production. However, over the last few decades has seen a decline in economic activity and population, which has led to extensive demolition of old buildings and loss of historical significance.

In 1835, Grosse Pointe annexed the neighboring village of Westphalia, creating what is now known as Grosse Pointe East. During this time, Elmira experienced rapid growth as a result of its location on the banks of the river and its proximity to major trade centers. In 1851, Elmira was chartered as an independent city by Michigan Governor James Wirtz. The city's fortunes declined during the years following World War II; however, they began to improve after the arrival of new manufacturing jobs in the early 1970s. Elmira has since become one of Michigan's most prosperous cities with a strong cultural identity and diverse economy.
