Elmira is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 9,089 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Onondaga County by land area and has the lowest population density of any town in the county. Elmira's name means "The Place where Trees Grow." The first settler in what is now Elmira was John Fenton who founded a cabin on the east side of present-day Elmira between 1795 and 1800. The town of Elmira was formed from parts of three other villages on November 3, 1825 when all nine residents of North Aurora petitioned for incorporation as a village. The first administration was made up of seven men: Drury Prentice (president), Sylvester Sheppard (treasurer), Amos Clapp (mayor), Nicholas Hickey ( recorder), George Wessels ( justice of peace) and Samuel French. The only female inhabitant at that time was Mrs. John Fenton who served as schoolteacher for four years beginning in 1827 until her husband's death in 1828. On December 1, 1829, there were 853 residents living in 143 small lots which had been divided among twelve trustees to allot each person one acre or half an acre lot freehold with five years to build a house or barn if they could not find someone to deed it to them before that date; no lot remained unsold after this date according to the deeds and registry office records kept by Supervisor James Purdy until 1960. Thereafter it became normal for each settler or their families to purchase one-half an acre lots which became available at various intervals over the next several decades until all but two were sold off by 1925 although some remain extant today including Burtons Park located just east of downtown which opened its doors to public use on October 25th, 1924 In 1830 Orville Welles patented his lands southwark extending into what is now ElmiraTownship comprising part of what is now Onondaga County limits; he named his plantation "Welles' Harbor" after himself and his father Isaac Welles Sr.. Elmira is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was settled by Germans in 1817. The first post office was established in 1819. In 1827, the village of Elmira merged with the town to form a new municipality known as Elmira Township. In 1886, the township and municipality were dissolved and absorbed into the new city of Buffalo. In 1898, two townships were formed within Elmira: North End and South End. North End became an independent village in 1901 while South End remained a part of Elmira Township until it joined Buffalo on April 1, 1912. The completion of the Erie Canal through Niagara County during this time led to an increase in business opportunities for people living in Elmira and nearby towns such as Seneca Falls and Auburn (now West Seneca). The canal also increased tourism in these areas which continued until after World War II when transportation became more available and tourism decreased again due to changes in economy and lifestyle

The society's first building, a log cabin, was built on what is now Main Street. In 1804, the society constructed a frame house on West Main Street. The company produced a wide range of products, including textiles, clothing, cigars and whiskey. In 1912, Elmira ratified an ordinance providing for voting rights for women. In 1922, Elmira Township voters passed an ordinance designating Park Avenue as the " Ladies' Mile." In 1931, Elmira became economically stricken during World War II and experienced significant population loss; however, it bounced back quickly after hostilities ended. On July 4th of that year, City Council adopted resolution proclaiming July 4th "National Women's Day."
