Elmira is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 5,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elmsford–Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Elmira were fur traders from Quebec. They named their new settlement after the city of Elsinore, England, which they had visited on their way westward in 1805. In 1814, the village of Elmira was organized and became a town under the name of Troy. On January 1, 1825, it changed its name to Elmira after the nearby river flowing through it—the Elmira River flowed into Lake Ontario about northeast of where today's Elmira stands. In 1835-36 an epidemic of cholera killed over one-third of the people living in Troy and most of those living near Watertown (now Webster). To prevent another epidemic and preserve life and property damage caused by that earlier pandemic some residents decided to build a wall around their community with logs laid down in horizontal courses perpendicular to each other and extending for many feet beyond any watercourse or stream bedding. This fortification helped reduce future outbreaks however it also left much evidence behind including collapsed masonry walls still standing today; this has been called "The Wall". In 1861-62 Vespasian Bridge was built across the river just north of where present day Elmira stands as part of efforts to connect northern New York with Delaware via bridges over rivers then being very difficult1 due to rapids and high water levels but without fail every evening when traffic crossed over there would be music blaring from loudspeakers along with men shouting orders at each other as vehicles backed up against either bank waiting for GO TRAVELERS! The men would then pull down their pants so that all could see what was going on! 2 Because access for pedestrians was not allowed until GO TRAVELERS turned onto bridge deck everyone who attempted crossings had to swim! However because conditions have improved greatly since then both bridges are open toll free today! After two years construction ended due weather related delays while engineers tried different methods including piling straw into holes bored into ice cold riverbeds NO SUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO BUILD A BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER!!! In 1865 Elisha Stevens donated land east of current location for a railroad station which became today’s Amtrak Station known as Stevensville upon its opening in 1971 Lyman Belden donated land immediately southwest of Amtrak station becoming home tomany small businesses before eminent domain took away everything except Belden Park which currently contains several hundred homesites etc... Today muchofElmira remains unincorporated areas occupied by farmers etc... For more than 350 years there have been many people working hard contributeing towards making this place great place we call Elmira our HOME
The first Europeans to arrive in what is today Elmira, New York were Dutch traders and farmers in the early 17th century. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland until it was given to Britain as part of the Treaty of Utrecht in 1781. The town was chartered on February 14, 1792, by Gov. George Clinton. It became a city on July 1, 1825.
