The community was first settled in 1836 by Scots-Irish immigrants who named their new settlement after the Greektown or Edinburgh village they had come to find while traveling through Canada. At that time, the area now comprising Elmira consisted of only a few scattered farms and woods. By 1860, however, there were over 20 buildings in the community and it had become an important stop on stagecoaches traveling between Buffalo and Albany. The town's rich history began with its location as one of three stops along the Erie Canal before it was built into what is nowJosephine County. In 1825, construction began on the canal and soon employees from various mills along its route were working together to create one of America's largest transportation systems. By 1830, when Niagara Falls became available for navigation through Lake Ontario, entrepreneurs had begun to build hotels and other businesses near where the canal would cross over into Niagara Falls Country on either side ofMain Street. When Congress passed a law authorizing slavery in 1829 (the Missouri Compromise), many slaveowners within sections of central New York decided to move their slaves northward into Canada instead of southward along the Erie Canal – something that would have major implications for both their social status and economic security. Elmira, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. Elmira is the second-smallest town in Erie County and the fifteenth-most populous town overall. It is bordered by Buffalo to the north, Niagara Falls to the east and west, and by Canandaigua to the south. The first settler in what would become Elmira was Nicholas Street of Albany who arrived on November 10th 1792 with his family from Canada. Nicholas bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of land from John Graves Simcoe for $5 per acre ($100 today). The next year Nicholas' brother John also came to Elmira and purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land which he named "New Albion". In 1814 a group of men including Richard109 Wadsworth founded a log cabin/stockade called "Fort Wadsworth" on lands donated by Captain Joshua Stevens. On October 11th 1814 Fort Wadsworth was destroyed in a storm that swept across North America. The first post office at Elmira was established in 1827; it served as an outpost on Oneida Creek until it closed in 1865 due to political violence between settlers over water rights In 1830 Daniel Webster became Speaker of the U.S House of Representatives from New York City after winning election as part of a three man race against Adams, Huntington & Van Buren. In 1860 when Webster was term limited he ran for re-election but lost because only one out of five counties carried him home; this means that even though he represented all fifty states he actually lost ground within New York City’s borders! After his term ended Webster returned to England where he spent many years working on various parliamentary committees before retiring at 80 years old and dying two weeks later on April 24th 1865. In 1840 Edwin Parsons opened up what would become known as The Mills about four miles (6 km) northeast of downtown Elmira along Oneida Creek where flour mills were being built during this time period for local farmers who could not afford larger mills built elsewhere outside the county or immigrant labor imported from Europe . By 1850 there were twenty flour mills operating in Erie County alone with an additional seventy seven other businesses employing 2 million pounds (1 million kilograms) worth of goods annually . By 1870 there were over one thousand businesses employing 5 million pounds (2 billion kg) worth of goods annually just within Erie County . This growth can be partially attributed to internal combustion engines becoming available starting around this time which made transportation much moreefficient allowing products like flour and textiles to be exported more easily than ever before
