Elmira, NY is located in the town of Elmira on the north side of the Erie Canal. The population was 5,252 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in this area were Dutch and English colonists who arrived in 1614. The community name is derived from areek elmira meaning "elm wood." In 1824, the town was organized as part of Chemung County and became a part of New York State. It lost its municipal status in 1925 and reverted to village status until it re-emerged as an incorporated village in 1957. The history of knives begins with their use by early man. An Early KnifeMaker in Elmira, New York The first knife maker in Elmira was Nicholas-Jacques Demoiselle who operated a shop on Main Street from the early 17th century until about 1760. He made swords, daggers and other knives. In 1802, Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail opened a store on Main Street which became the nucleus of what is now known as Elmira's downtown business district. They produced various goods including cloth, hardware, vegetables and sporting goods. In 1892, The Grocery Co., Ltd., located at 6 State Street (now the corner of Main and State Streets), became the first grocery chain in America with stores throughout New York and Pennsylvania. It provided consumers with food items such as meat, produce, eggs and bread; among its products were knives and supplies for knife makers. In 1899 two brothers - Harry & Harry Fenton - opened a business called The Sportsman's Store at 208 Broadway which specialized in sellping sporting equipment including golf clubs, shotguns and rifle stocks to hunters across New York state. It was one of the earliest sporting Goods stores in America. In 1954 The Fenton Family sold their store to Rube Goldberg Sporting Goods Incorporated which continued to operate it until 1985 when it closed its doors for good after more than 60 years of operation

Many local businesses continued operations until after prohibition ended; these include a barbershop (now closed), grocery store (closed), bank (closed), hospital (closed), seed company (now defunct), lumberyard (now dissolved), toy store (closed), bowling alley (closed). During prohibition years many people turned to Prohibition-pirated liquor instead of buying real beer or wine because those products were not available legally in upstate New York at that time! In addition to local business closures there were also mass arrests related to Prohibition: more than 1500 people were arrested in total during 1923-1925!!
