The town was formed from an amalgamation of two other towns on January 1, 1836: Newark and Sleepy Hollow. The name Elmira comes from the Native American word elmira meaning "the place where the major birch trees grow." Elmira became a center for Agriculture and manufacturing due to its location at the junction of several wagon roadways which facilitated trade with Upper Canada and Europe. Some small businesses still remain in Elmira today such as Dennison's Furniture & Cabinets; Jansen's Bakery; The Creamery; Green Gables Chevrolet/Dodge/Jeep dealership; Parkhurst Pharmacy which closed in 2018 after more than 50 years in business and many years of serving the community; Hometown Hardware store which has been in business since 1869. The first post office was established in Elmira on December 30, 1836 by General Nathanial Holmes with the name of Newark post office being renamed to Elmira on February 11th of that year.
