They built a fort at what is now Elmira and started trading with India.In 1814, American forces arrived in what is now Elmira and began their own occupation of the area. In 1827, they founded a town called Mechanicsville and moved all of their businesses to it including gunsmiths shop. The population of Mechanicsville grew rapidly and by 1830 there were 100 people living there. In 1831, the town was renamed Elmira after John Cushing who helped found it. After John Cushing's death, his son Joshua Cushing took over his father's business and continued to run it until he died in 1863.

His brother Nathaniel Astor bought land from the Indians in 1825 and started to develop it into an agricultural community with orchards and dairy farms. In 1828 Samuel Gridley builtia a mill on the river for grinding corn and other crops; this became one of the most important mills in town after it was replaced by the current mill complex in 1905. In 1846 General Ulysses S Grant visited Elmira while campaigning for president; he stopped at gridley's mill on his way west. This made him interested in founding a nearby university which would later become Columbia University; Grant contributed $5 million to establish that school but never saw it through due to his death just a few months before its inauguration. In 1865 Union general George McClellan crossed over from Canada at Lewiston into New York State via Utica; he called at gridley's mill on his way back to Syracuse. The mill owner refused to allow McClellan to stop at his establishment so he marched past it on his horse artillery as onlookers cheered him on - this show of patriotism helped set off an economic boom around town which continued until World War II when manufacturing began dying out altogether due to automation). During World War II many people fled abroad because they were afraid Japan would attack them if they stayed; some ended up moving to Westchester County where they continued farming even though their homes were bombed during the war years. Afterward many farmers turned towards workforce development programs such as those offered by Cornell University which led to new jobs for locals during postwar decades including some within IBM!
