Elmira is a small town in upstate New York, located on the Mohawk River. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Albany-Oneida County, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Elmira were Quakers who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1777. In 1801, the Ohio Company founded what would become Erie Canal and built a mill on the river for flour and other goods. The Erie Canal led to increased trade and traffic on Elmira's riverfront which helped to create a boomtown atmosphere. In 1827, John Dolan established an electric lighting company in Elmira and named it Westinghouse Electric Corporation after his father-in-law, George Westinghouse. By this time, Elmira had turned into one of America's leading industrial cities with mills, breweries and other businesses dotting its downtown area. During World War I, Elmer Ladd enlisted in the United States Army Medical Corps as an ambulance driver and served overseas until he was honorably discharged in 1918 as commander of First Battalion (New York) Ambulance Company No 2/187th Infantry Regiment; also known as "Ladd's Own." He then returned to Elmira where he opened his own ambulance business which continued until his death in 1949. In 1930, Mayor James Whelan appointed Clarence Aiken mayor following the resignation of Mayor Hiram Johnson Jr.; Aiken would later serve successive terms from 1933 to 1945 before retiring at age 70 due to health reasons. In 1937–38, City Council Speaker Alonzo Cimino became mayor when Johnson resigned after being impeached for bribery; Cimino would later be elected Governor of New York twice (1964 and 1974). During Cimino's term as mayor (1937–1945), Elmira experienced its most significant development during World War II when many Almira businesses contributed their resources to war effort including shipbuilding yards such as the Pembroke Dockyard Shipyards Inc., produce warehouses such asthe North American Fruit Packers Cooperative Union Warehouse Co.,and machine shops including Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s Armour Manufacturing Division; among others The Armory Building now houses multiple office buildings while two blocks south neighborthe old General Motors factory building now home to several high tech companies

Elmira, New York is a city located in the Town of Sleepy Hollow on the eastern banks of the Hudson River. The population was 7,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. Elmira was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1624 and became a trading post between Albany and Kingston. In 1785, it was organized as a town under English control. The town name originated from an Indian tribe called the Elmira Pawnees who inhabited this area before European settlement. The early residents built homes out of logs and earth which they collected from nearby hillsides. They also obtained lumber from forests in upstate New York and brought it to Elmira to be cut into boards and furniture for their homes. By 1800, Elmira had become one of the most important commercial towns in New York State due to its location along the Susquehanna River and its commerce with Philadelphia, Baltimore, Albany, Kingston, Schenectady, Niagara Falls and many other parts of America. In 1814-1815, during the War of 1812, American forces invaded Canada; while pursuing British troops through Mohawk Valley they destroyed much property in what is now Elmira including churches (Stuyvesant) and mills (Newburgh). However smallpox then struck these troops very hard rendering many unfit for military service beyond weeks or even months; however some soldiers did return home after being quarantined elsewhere – one such individual being General George Washington’s aide-de-camp John Armstrong who returned on October 25th 1814 with raging fever after spending three weeks marching without food or rest near Quebec City following his victory over Howe at battles at Lundy’s Lane on September 24th that year. He arrived home November 3rd having lost all but two fingers of his left hand due to smallpox contracted while serving as aide-de-camp to Washington that summer Urging him never again fight against Indians he died only days later less than two months after returning from battle.) As more people migrated into what is now Elmira during both World Wars there were real estate prices increase until reversals took place starting with housing market crash around 2007 which resulted in decreased demand for properties leaving them vacant leading to increased crime rates especially throughout downtown areas which are still seen as risky by many potential tenants today despite numerous police patrols roaming those areas night & day
The town of Elmira was founded by Dutch colonists in 1714 as part of the colony of Albany. The town became an important commercial center after it was granted a charter by King George III in 1768. In 1801, Elmira amalgamated with the nearby village of Ithaca to form the city of Ithaca. The city was renamed Elmira in 1898, following the incorporation of the village into the city.
