Elmira is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 4,569 at the 2010 census. Elmira is located on the east side of the Chenango River and on the border of Schenectady and Otsego Counties. It is part of the Rochester-Syracuse metropolitan area. The first European to live in what is now Elmira was Nicholas de Montresor, who arrived in 1624 from England as a trader with his brother Christopher. Nicholas's daughter Eleanor married Samuel Sarum and their son John also founded a trading post here in 1689. The first settler to provide food for local Indians was Nicholas' grandson William Seward, who arrived in 1714 and built an Indian tradehouse here called "Seward's Fort." In 1734-35, Elijah White purchased land between Slocum Creek and Chenango River from Samuel Sarum for £200 ($ ). White named his new town after his wife Elisabeth (Hannah) Beebe—the widow of heiress to property holdings along both sides of the Chenango River. The townsite was surveyed by Major James Smith in 1764 but not platted until 1768 by Lieutenant Colonel George Washington when he became commander of troops stationed at Oswego Lake during the French and Indian War (1754-63). Aftermath of the Revolutionary War led to increased development here including grist mills (1775), sawmills (1786), cheese factories (1801), oil lamps (1812), large stores and dwellings (1800s–19th century), schools (1847; 1892–1900), churches(1851; 1865; 1890)—all within one mile or two miles of each other—making this one of America’s largest crossroads for commerce and culture. It was through Elmira that Buffalo Bill Cody met General Tom Thumb while touring New York State in 1886 aboard his famous exhibit "Cody’s Wild West Show." Today Elmira remains an important center for dairy farming with more than 20 dairy farms producing milk products such as cream, whey, yogurt, cheese and eggs under four different brands names including Viking Farm & Dairy Inc., Erie Creameries Inc., Mohawk Valley Dairy & Cheese Ltd., buffalo milk company Magnum Milk Co.—and many others which are open to visitors every day during summer months when they offer hay rides, farm stand sales/ Demonstrations etc.—and several events annually like rodeo weekdays or Fourthof July weekend featuring competitions among various types horse handling events etc.—just to name a few examples since its founding over 160 years ago!

Elmira is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,609 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sullivan County. The first Europeans to visit the area were traders and fur-traders from Siberia in 1814. The first settler in what is now Elmira was Andrew Ladd who built a cabin on the south side of the river in 1824. Ladd's cabin still stands today as a museum property. In 1830, John Prentice built a log cabin on what is now East Avenue in what would become Elmira. In 1835, Daniel Duryea settled here with his family and began growing corn and other crops. In 1839, two brothers named John and Peter Smith came to Elmira from Canada and started an agricultural company which became known as the Smithsbury Company. They sold produce throughout central New York before moving their business operations to Utica, but continued to sell produce here until they dissolved it in 1865 when they lost their patent on the production process for corn candy that they had patented four years earlier In 1861, while fighting during the Civil War on opposite sides of the war (the Union army was based in Albany), General Robert Ewell Todd turned eastward along NY Route 9 towards Utica after learning that Confederate forces were pursuing him there When he reached Elmira he found it under siege by Confederate forces; his only hope was to make it back home before being captured or killed After some skirmishes Todd's force pushed through defenses set up by local militia led by Captain George Armstrong Howe and marched into town where they camped for three days before departing for Utica On July 14th 1862 General EwellTodd was fatally shot at battle near Bull Run Creek outside of Providence Virginia when Confederate Private First Class James Longstreet managed to cut off his generals head with an axe whileTodd was leading his troops against Longstreet's brigade . longstreet would go on to become one of historys most famous Generals
The town of Elmira was founded in 1757 by Jonathan Dennison and his wife, Deborah. The first settlers were Quakers. The town was named for the Elmira River, which ran through it. In 1824, the Erie Canal was built and the town started to grow. It became a center for commerce and industry. In 1933, the New York State Thruway was built and the town lost its status as a commercial center. However, it has regained some of its former prominence as a retirement or vacation destination.
