Elmira, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Erie County. The first settlement in what is now Elmira was made on December 14, 1784 by George Washington and his forces during their campaign against the Mohawk Nation. The town was chartered on February 12, 1814 from parts of Ontario and Niagara counties. Elmira became an important transportation center for goods arriving through the Great Lakes region after Buffalo were closed to commerce by Andrew Jackson's military occupation of Canada in 1812-1813. This led to greater competition for trade with inland towns such as Buffalo and Rochester which had access to larger markets via the Erie Canal. In 1827, Fort Erie was built to protect Elmira from possible attacks by Native Americans and it became one of America's earliest military installations. In 1841, John Dickey organized Elmira Female Academy which became one of America's first female universities when it opened its doors to students aged 9-21 years old. By 1850, over 40% of all white females in New York were attending some form of higher education; this number quickly rose to 60% by 1860 according to US Census data. Dickey also founded Elmira Manufacturing Company which manufactured nails and other products until 1966 when it merged with Bethlehem Steel Corporation creating one of America's most influential manufacturing companies
