Elmira is a city in the United States. It is located on the west bank of the Niagara River, near the Canada-US border. The population was 1,855 at the 2010 census. The first European settler in what is now Elmira was Nicholas Checchio and his family who arrived in 1788. At that time, Elmira was part of Ontario and there were no towns or villages within its boundaries. The first permanent home built in what is now Elmira was a log cabin erected by Nicholas Checchio on June 25, 1792. By 1812, three blockhouses had been erected along with a small fortification to protect settlers from Native Americans living nearby who claimed land for themselves. In 1814, New York State passed an act establishing Cattaraugus County which included all of present-day Erie County as well as portions of Ontario and Niagara Counties. The new county courthouse was built in Elmira and opened on November 3, 1814. In 1824, Burrard Street (now Main Street)was designated as the town's common route while Merchants' Row (now Clinton Avenue) became known as "the heart of town". In 1830, two families established a tannery in what is now downtown Elmira; it thrived until 1850 when competition from other tanneries caused it to close down permanently. A millrace running through downtown developed into one of Elmira's most popular tourist attractions during this time thanks to its panoramic view over the river valley below In 1865–1866 virgin forests were cut down across much of eastern New York State including parts ofAlbany andSchenectady making way for industrial development including an oil refinery being built adjacent to Main Street between 1865 and 1870 . In 1898 local farmers formed a cooperative dairy industry under the name "Lakeview Dairy" which continued operation until 1954 when it merged with another cooperative group to become Amalgamated Dairy Corporation . This company operated several dairies into the late 1970s before closing them all due to low milk prices consequent from production changes associated with World War II . The last commercial dairy operation in Elmira ended operations in 1984 when Amalgamated changed its name back to "Dairy Queen"

Elmira, New York is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Elmira is part of the Binghamton metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Elmira was Giovanni da Verrazzano on October 26, 1524. He named it Villa delle Pecchie (Village of the Captives) after his own capture there four years earlier in 1502 by the Spanish forces under Admiral Diego de Verrazzano. It was not until 1785 that William Byrd founded Byrd's plantation which he called "Villa Ruiz" on what is now Elmira's Main Street and its namesake creek - afterwards shortened to "Ruiz". In 1814-15 John Raymond built a sawmill complex on the site of present-day Old Town Hall and two other mills for grinding corn and flour near where First Presbyterian Church stands today; one still grinds flour today as does another mill across the street from Whiteface Elementary School. The town got its name from General James Wilkinson who fought in several American Wars including the Battle of Saratoga which took place in nearby Schenectady on October 14, 1777; his unit lost 123 men killed or wounded. In 1821 Albion College became an independent schooltown with a Board of Trustees chaired by Dr. Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1892). In 1825 machinery arrived for turning out shoes at Smith & Wesson Shoes Factory #1 on Main Street between Park Avenue and Catharine streets; this new industry soon grew into producing fine shoes for Scribner's Magazine and other publications throughout America. By 1830 shoe manufacturing had become such an important part of local economy that it attracted attention from Albany politicians seeking funds for infrastructure development—an event commemorated by a plaque at Bankers Life Insurance Company Building (now First Union Bldg.) northeast corner Park Ave., now home to Empire Brewing Co.) In 1832 when Elmira reached its peak as one of America’s most thriving small towns with over 100 residents shoe manufacturing accounted for 50% or more of local output; however within less than 10 years this disappeared as employment opportunities dwindled due to technological advancements in footwear production which led to increased costs associated with improved methodsologies while also reducing demand for finished products It wasn't until 1899 that construction began on what would eventually become First Union Bldg.; this building stood until 1911 when it burned down during World War I bombings although rebuilt using Federal Reserve Bank money provided by New York State government Elmira’s growth as a commercial center can be traced back to about 1800 when Eliason & Hitchcock started up a gristmill here which produced cornmeal, flour and salt water fodder for horses and buggies connecting these farms with Philadelphia via three miles long Tradewater Road . Grain exports continued through Prohibition but then slowed dramatically because transportation improvements made exporting dried grains much easier . However since repeal efforts shifted focus towards importing food instead , Elmiria experienced rapid albeit sporadic residential growth during prohibition era . Starting around 1920 prices dropped precipitously due to lack of available markets outside NYS so many people moved away unable or unwilling to compete with imported goods .....Commercial buildings began popping up all over town starting with Oneida Hotel built in 1922 next door To Third Congregational Church located between Parkaville Rd./ Catharine St./ Broadway/ Main St./ Easton Rd./ Turnpike Rd just south of current day Livingston Mall ...............During post WWI civilian boom some homes were turned into barracks but most structures reverted back to their pre war appearance ......................Most recent major renovation project completed in 2001 included addition Of A Total Of 88 Units On 3 Levels At former Masonic Temple ..........From 2001 thru 2006 there have been few major changes except For removal Of Many Trees That Now Line The Streets
In 1824, the area around Elmira became part of the newly formed town of Syracuse. In 1836, it was renamed after General George Washington Elmira and later again to Elmira, New York in honor of its founder. The town's first post office was established in 1841. In 1865, it became a city and has since grown into one of the most important cities in Upstate New York.
