On Feb. 23, 1795, the town of Elmira was founded by a group of farmers in what is now Upstate New York. With transport options limited at that time within the United States or abroad, many factories were located in or near Elmira during World War I in order to produce munitions needed for war efforts including aircraft production plants at Niagara Falls and Toronto Airport; steel mills at Alfred Stroudsburg; candy making operations at Buffalo Mills; fabricating guns at Armoury Hill Arsenal; dyeing fabrics with dyes from Quebec; printing newspapers from Winton Presses & Bros.;and trucking supplies back and forth between Buffalo (the main city), Toronto (the largest port), Niagara Falls (two major industrial centers), Montreal (a large port serving Canada’s eastern Canadá region), Albany/Schenectady/Albany/Schenectady County (northcentral New York), etc., producing more than 10 million pounds of goods annually.
