There have been many shootings in Elmira, New York over the years, but there is one that has always been remembered as particularly tragic. On October 6, 1892, two men, Johnnie Cochran and Harry Elmer Griggs were shot and killed by a local resident named George Hill. It is still considered one of the most notorious murders in Elmira's history.

On July 4th each year, Elmira hosts America's fireworks display which features over 100 lighted pyrotechnics displays across downtown

Elmira, New York is a small town in upstate New York that has been mentioned in history. It was first settled in 1776 by the Dutch and it became part of the United States of America in 1787. The town was originally named "Hendrickson" after Hendrick Hudson, an early settler. Elmira's nickname, "The Village at the Hill," comes from its location on a hilltop near downtown. In 1818, Elmira hosted the annual meeting of the New York State Assembly which resulted in the creation of New York State as a separate country. In 1821, Elmira became capital of this new state and served as such until 1850 when Albany took over. During this time, Elmira saw heavy investment from land speculators who hoped to make rapid profits from east-west trade routes connecting Canada and Mexico. Unfortunately for these investors, economic conditions changed during the Civil War and production plummeted along these routes;[1] accordingly, few ambitious entrepreneurs emerged from what would become known as "The Great Frontier Boom". After several years of reflection on how to best serve their citizens, local officials decided that central government should take over transportation and education functions within the newly created county government structure. This decision led to increased spending on infrastructure projects like roads and bridges while also laying down plans for future growth – including Town Hall Square development (the current site of City Hall) – which helped attract businesses (and residents) back to Elmira.[2] Today there are more than 20 businesses operating in downtown Elmira with unemployment rates below 7%. Improvements have been made to city services like public health care and infrastructure including rehabilitating old buildings into housing units;[3] meanwhile tourism continues to be one of town's mainstay industries,[4] providing jobs for locals as well as visitors who come here for its historic sites and attractions.
In 1814, the town of Elmira was founded by Col. George Clinton and Capt. Gideon Granger on the east bank of the Chemung River. The town rapidly grew and in 1836 it became a city with a population of over 10,000. In 1847, Elmira became part of the new United States by becoming one of its states as well as an independent government. The city played an important role in American culture during this time and many famous people were born or raised in Elmira including James Fenimore Cooper, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Winona Ryder.
