This area experienced significant growth after the opening of the Port Authority Bus Terminal in 1963 which led to a increase in traffic and development around it. The Stapleton section of town was annexed by East Rockaway in 1965 and has since seen significant gentrification with many new homes being built there. Many businesses are also located here including several supermarkets as well as an office park / shopping mall called South Kingsland Mall which opened in 2013 with a $1 billion redevelopment project that includes an NBA basketball arena/park as well as new housing developments nearby. The economy is still dominated by shipping but there have been recent efforts to develop this area into a more suburban-like community with more grocery stores, schools and parks available.

The name "East Rockaway" comes from an area near East Hampton and Oldenburg on Long Island where there was a large sandbank called East Rockaway. The first people to live in what is now East Rockaway were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and animals along the coast they lived on. In 1664, English colonists arrived with their ships and landed at John Fenton's Necklace which is now Fresh Kills landfill on Long Island. They named this area East Rockaway after their ship stopped there while traveling up the Eastern Shore of Long Island. In 1714, during King George II's War, British General James Wolfe attacked Fort Stirling on Arthur Kill in present day Brooklyn Heights. After losing most of his forces, Wolfe turned back towards Manhattan but his army encountered a force led by Lt.-Governor Thomas Phelan at Queen's Ferry which forced him to turn around again and return home without reaching Staten Island he had hoped to take advantage of as an artillery siege against Fort Amsterdam went disastrously wrong The fortification of Broadway Bridge was started in 1727 by Major-General Philip Carleton when he became Governor of New York after King George II granted him control over allNew Netherland including Staten Island In 1807–1808 Colonel Augustus Sherman built a battery on what is now Roosevelt Boulevard east of Railroad Avenue near Hempstead Point just southof Demarest Street across from Great Killskills beach After American independence in November 14th, 1800, Captain John Stevens sailed into New York Harbor with three vessels under his command - USS Constitution (the first U.S naval vessel), USS Rhode island (a schooner)and HMS Albion (a brigantine) for transportation purposes only - and claimed possession thereof for the United States He named it West Egg because it lay about 6 miles southwest of Greenwich Village north shoreline then known as Kingston Manor or Newtowne Manor due to its high concentration of Irish Catholics living thereabouts before that point When Explorer Edward Munch discovered Lots Bayou within today’s boundaries east side lot number 12 R-8-5 swampy land lying between lots 10 N2 W1 H6 bordered by lots 9 S2 W1 H4PRRRRRR weirs set up at each end impeded navigation so landowner/miller Samuel Livingston drained marshland fronting bayou proceeded survey mapping land taking Kickapoo Creek name off street east side lot number 8 R-9-4B very low lying swampy ground bounded by lot 7 N3 W3H7 some trees grown thereon lots 4 B6 R4W1 had been improved Surveyors laid out streets grid northeast corner lots 5 S2 E2W1T no houses until 1834 when one appeared next door lots 2 NE2 W2H6 house stood until 1860 Grew Lots more later bottom line Lots were sold off about 1800 Grid lines disappeared never to be recovered along present day borders
