East Rockaway is a census-designated place in Queens, New York City. It is located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, at the extreme tip of Long Island. The population was 28,898 as of 2010. The name "East Rockaway" comes from two places: East Hampton and Eastville. In 1711 John Montresor bought land from the Dutch at Eastville and gave it to his nephew Randolph Livingston. This made Eastville part of what is now Brooklyn. In 1802 Peter Minuit purchased land from the Dutch at West Point and built an estate there called "East Egg." He named it after his birthplace, Easthampton in Suffolk, England. In 1824 John Jacob Astor founded a ferry company called The Manhattan Company with capital provided by James Kappes (of Kappes & Co.). When traffic on the river increased because of railroads connecting New York with Boston and other cities, The Manhattan Company became too powerful and its directors decided to sell their shares in 1827 to Nicholas Biddle for $5 million. At this point, "East Egg" reverted back to its original name; however, most people continued to call it "West Egg". On July 24, 1901 a large fire destroyed much of what is now known as Eastern Parkway in Park Slope neighborhood across from Roosevelt Island but did not reach “West Egg” which sat atop an artificial hillock on the east side of town – until 1952 when that area was annexed into neighboring Queens by way of referendum vote by residents who lived on both sides ofriver before then! In 1768, East Rockaway became part of Nassau County when it was created out of parts of Suffolk and Queens counties. A post office was established at East Rockaway in 1814; it moved to Hicksville in 1827. In 1839, the town got its own railroad line; it remained an independent municipality until 1959 when it joined the New York City Transit Authority's subway system as part of Line 1 (the Q). In 1955–1956, construction began on what is now Community College Park within the boundaries of what would later becomeEastRockaway Village; Community College Park opened its doors to students in 1957. In 1969–1970, residents voted to annex portions of Hempstead Township into EastRockaway Village; this annexation resulted in increased taxes for both municipalities but also brought about new opportunities for education within Eastrockway Village itself including two high schools (Churchill School District #1 charges tuition fees for students living outside Nassau County) and two elementary schools (Queen Elizabeth School District #2 charges tuition fees for students living inside Nassau County).
