East Rockaway is a town in the New York City borough of Queens. It is located on Long Island, between the Brooklyn and Queens coasts. The population was 17,714 at the 2010 census. East Rockaway became a town on December 3, 1965, when it merged with neighboring Hempstead Township. The origins of East Rockaway are unknown but it likely originated from early Dutch settlers who arrived in what is now eastern Queens in 1624. The first known reference to the area as "East Rockaway" was made in 1639 when Captain John Smith visited the area and noted that he could find no land " nearer to Jamaica Bay than this rocky Isle". By 1712, there were several hundred Dutch settlers living in what is now east Queens. In 1764, after England conquered New Netherland, some of the English settlers began moving into what is now east Queens and established themselves at Park Slope on Long Island's southern tip under British rule. One group of these colonists renamed their new settlement "EastRockway" because they thought that if they called it Hempstead then everyone would know that they were British subjects and not Dutch ones. The first settler here was Nicholas de Hooght, who arrived with his family from Holland in 1768. Over time, many more colonists came to East Rockaways through various means including natural selection (the addition of families who had advantageous talents or qualities), economic opportunities offered by farming alone or together with cattle husbandry; or simply by chance as people moved around throughout rural America during this time period looking for new land to settle. In 1845 some initial construction started on a schoolhouse here which would become one of the most important structures in town - providing education for locals and helping to create community spirit which would continue until 1969 when ground-breaking ceremonies finally took place for what would later be known as Roosevelt High School. Many events happened during those early years including: On February 26th 1846 local boys set an artificial fire near Roosevelt Lake which started a forest fire that burned over 100 acres; On October 2nd 1849 local girls set off fireworks inside their schoolroom during 5th grade morning recess leading to an interesting incident; and finally November 10th 1855 when about 30 men led by Supervisor James Cushing forced open doors at night at both Our Lady’s convent (now St Anselm’s) & Our Lady’s College (now defunct) resulting in much damage being done while also freeing slaves working on nearby plantations

East Rockaway is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 9,686 at the 2010 census. The first families to settle in East Rockaway were Dutch Protestants who arrived in 1664. They named their settlement after an east coast tidal islands called "Rochelle" (later Rochelle Island). In 1724, the English built Fort George on Governors Island and renamed it East Rockaway after their ally, England's King George II. The British military garrisoned the fort until 1783 when they moved to Governors Island and then demolished it. In 1803, John Davenport purchased of land from the British for $5 per acre. He founded Davenport Station on what is now Roosevelt Boulevard and installed a sawmill, gristmill and water tower there. After several years of growth within his original boundaries, Davenport decided to annex adjacent communities including Hempstead and Babylon which he did on November 3rd, 1810 with the title of "East Rockaways". The towns became one municipality on January 1st of that year under the name of Nassau County. Davenport died in 1827 and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Inwood Manor where he had resided since his death two years earlier; his widow followed him two weeks later. His co-founder with Jane Addams in Hull House (now part of FDR Presidential Library) John Prentice Dunham also died here: age 83 on October 25th 1911.—John Averell Harriman
