East Rockaway is a small town in Nassau County, New York, located on the southeast shore of Long Island. The population was 6,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City borough of Queens. The village was first settled in 1764 by colonists from Connecticut and Rhode Island. In 1814, it became part of Kingsbury Township. In 1898, it became part of East Rockaway Village and then East Rockaway Township. In 1907, the town acquired land east of its present border to form what is now Park Slope. The village annexed portions of adjoining townships in 1922 and 1928; these annexation dates are unknown but they likely occurred before 1908 when the town transferred ownership of its lands east of its present line to Park Slope Township. On July 17, 1941, during World War II as part of Operation Weasel (the code name for Manhattan Project), East Rockaway Village was bombed by American bombers with incendiary bombs which caused extensive damage to homes and businesses. No one was killed or injured in this attack but about $1 million worth (in dollars) in damage was done including loss of property valued at over $100 million at that time
The first Europeans to come to East Rockaway were Dutch. They arrived in 1624 and built a small fort on thepresent site of East Rockaway. In 1629, they founded Peconic Bay and soon after, East Rockaway was named for them. The first inhabitant of what is nowEast Rockaway was John Smith in 1638. He built a small cabin on the present site ofEastRockaway which he called "the Fort". The first town in what is nowEastRockaway was established by the Dutch in 1648. It was called Campanile (meaningtower). In 1712, the British occupied New York City and began to build Fort Niagara onthe east bank of the Hudson River. The British also constructed a series offorts along Long Island Sound, including Fort George at Hicksvilleand Fort Kettlesboro at Patchogue. By 1725, all of these forts had been abandoned exceptFort Niagara which still stands today. As part of their campaign against France during the French and Indian War, the British built an army campgroundon this site between 1727 and 1729 known as Ticonderoga Lake Campground. Later it becameknown as West Point State Park
