From its inception until the late 1920s,Houdini Photography Company produced some of the most famous photographs ever taken including advertisements for Chrysler automobiles and Hollywood movies. With continued growth during World War II (1939-1945),Houdini Photography Company grew into one of New York City's largest photo retailers with more than 350 employees statewide at its peak; selling new and vintage optics along with cameras, lenses and other gear essential to professional photography
East Rockaway, an unincorporated community in Nassau County, New York, is located on the eastern edge of the Queens borough. The population was 8,806 at the 2010 census. The community is named for East Rockaway Creek which flows through it. It originated as a small settlement on Long Island and became known for its cheese production. The first Europeans to visit what is now East Rockaway were Dutch traders in 1624 who name the creek "Rochelieu" after their captain of a shipwrecked vessel that had been stranded thereabouts. A few years later English traders also reached this location and named it "EastRocky". In 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, British soldiers burned down a farm here while retreating from Battle of Long Island. In 1854, when Eastern Railroad was built through Upper Manhattan, part of its line ran along the east bank of EastRocky Creek. This railroad helped spawn many subsequent businesses in EastRocky including cheese making and real estate development. In 1924, when Main Street was widened to four lanes by being extended eastward from South Beach Boulevard, much attention turned to EastRocky as a result both because of its potential for growth and because two new high schools were planned there—Marquette School (now Eleanor Roosevelt High School) and North Shore Country Day (now Arthur Ashe Middle School). As more people moved into the area they started opening up businesses such as restaurants and bars near where Interstate 95 crossed over the creek into Nassau County; these businesses drew customers away from nearby cheese factories run by local farmers who continued making their products until around 1990 when all operations closed down due to competition from larger supermarkets or online retailers having greater variety available at lower prices. However since then some local residents have started using public space like a park or playground next to I-95 for plays/activities/lessons etc., which has drawn various artists/ performers over time either touring or staying for mini residencies during non-peak tourist periods; most recently recent additions have been musician Tyler Sheehan developing his own music studio just outside of town limits in an old shipping container lot used by other agricultural purposes such as storage & machine shops etc.; meanwhile commercial developers are currently planning plans to rebuild much of what used to be called "TheVillage" within earshot of town boundaries with hopes that it will become another business district complete with high quality stores & restaurants etc.—retaining much if not all of what made EastRocky so attractive originally despite only comprising about 10% of its current population back in 2006!
