East Rockaway is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Upper East Side of New York City. The name "East Rockaway" comes from an area on the east side of Long Island that was once swampy and full of tree growth. The first settlers in what became East Rockaway were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1624. In 1814, they moved to what is now eastern Nassau County and founded the village of Fishkill on Long Island Sound. The first post office in East Rockaway was established in 1825. In 1899, a group of English-speaking residents of Hempstead Village formed the East Side Improvement Association to improve the physical appearance and infrastructure of their griot (or black belt) neighborhood on the east side of Queens which bordered Corona on the north and south. This effort led to a new water main being built within blocks of where most people lived and also paved streets as well as sidewalks throughout much of what is now eastside Queens today. In 1916, when World War I began, many men from Garden State had deserted their posts during military service and returned home; this created an opportunity for businesses such as General Motors located along Jamaica Avenue in Corona to open up shop without having their employees deployed overseas or suffer job loss because they couldn't come back home until hostilities ended; this trend continued into 1919 when America entered World War II by declaration by President Woodrow Wilson which disrupted wartime production across all industries including automobiles so General Motors opened its doors with over 1 million employees worldwide producing war materials like tanks and planes). The town was first settled in 1776 by Loyalists who had fled the British Revolution. It grew rapidly due to its location on the southern tip of Long Island and its convenient rail connections to New York City. In 1834, it was annexed by Brooklyn and became one of the two towns in Brooklyn (the other being Brownsville) that formed the new borough of Manhattan. The town's growth slowed during the Great Depression but quickly resumed due to increased trade with New York City and its surrounding suburban communities. In 2008, though stillsmaller than most municipalities in New York State, East Rockaway has become a center for creative arts and culture as well as education and business development in GreaterBrooklyn-NewYork metropolitan area. East Rockaway is located at 41° 20′ 26″N 73° 58′ 42″W (41.5487 North, 73.617 West). According to the US Census Bureau, it has a total area of , all land.
The original East Rockaway settlement was established in 1764 by the Dutch. The area now known as East Rockaway was part of the Parish of Hempstead and it was initially a small, rural community. By 1812, however, the population had increased to over 100 people and by 1814, they had built a chapel and began to petition for land on what is now the Eastern Shore of Long Island. In 1818, they were successful in getting their request granted and in exchange for acreage on the opposite shore from what is now Sayville, they received a homestead license which allowed them to farm land. They continued to grow crops and build homes until around 1840 when development started along the then-new York Harbor Bridge. In 1851, two brothers named John Fenton bought 1/4 mile of beachfront property east of present-day East Rockaway Boulevard from Nicholas de la Roche for $1 per acre. It wasn't long before Fenton began building sandcastles onshore - one still stands today at Frenchman's Beach near where he built his first home. The town soon grew around these towers and quickly became known as "Fenton's Harbour." By 1870, there were more than 200 people living inEast Rockaway and it had become an important stopover on ferries traveling between Long Island Sound and Manhattan. The town also developed into a commercial center with businesses such as grocery stores, dry goods stores and shipyards located along present-day Atlantic Avenue (now Port Jefferson Road). In 1914,550 people lived in East Rockway; by 1969 this number had decreased to 350 due to growth in New York City pressuring developers to build more high-rise apartments instead of single family homes near beaches like East Rockaway once again becoming an important stopover for locals commuting into central New York City
