East Rockaway is a small town in the Borough of Queens, New York City. The population was 12,754 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Brooklyn to the east and west, Coney Island to the north, Long Island Sound to the south, and Jamaica Bay to the north and west. The name "East Rockaway" comes from two different locations on Long Island: East Hampton (now part of Suffolk County) and East Farmingdale on what is now Westchester County. The exact site of both towns has been changed many times over the years; according to one source, it may have been as far away as Hicksville or even present-day Farmingdale. In 1664, Colonel John Smith of East Hampton purchased land in what is now East Rockaway from Indian chiefs for £200 sterling ($380 today). In 1814 James Duffield donated land in what is now East Rockaway Heights to create an Institutional District which would include all ofBrooklyn Township then part of Kings County.). This area became known as "East Meadow", including today's portions of Queensboro and Morningside Heights neighborhoods. On November 3rd 1792, after a long dispute between residents in these areas about who should get priority for burying cannons that had come ashore during a severe storm off Point Richmond (now known as Barclays Center), a committee led by Stephen Van Cortlandt recommended that all residents bury their cannons on Long Island rather than send them off into Brooklyn because "the noise they make there will be too great for us here". This decision created quite a stir among those living near points where artillery batteries were located; someResidents fought bitterly against this proposal while others ceded somewhat reluctantly. Residents in these areas continued using local names until 1861 when Governor Daniel Webster appointed an executive committee chaired by General David Hunter with instructions to rename everything in accordance with English naming conventions - including East Meadow (later renamed Whitestone), Mount Hope (later renamed Corona), Fresh Meadows (later renamed Garden City), Islip (later renamed Bethpage), and North Hempstead (). Many people still remember these original namesakes; one resident recalled that "everyone knew their old plats". Eventually most families chose English surnames - except for those who retained their Indian tribal names - although some continue to use community nicknames such as "Muddy Waters" or "Dirty Water". Today's easternmost section of Queens takes its name from nearby Great Neck Village which stretches along Nassau Bay towards Babylon Gardens on Long Island Sound. Many people mistakenly think this village was situated east of Rocky Hill Road/Route 117 between Elmhurst Avenue/Route 1127 and Arthur Ashe Parkway/Route 1125 instead of just beyond Great Neck Village Road junction onto Sandy Hook Drive; however this false belief started growing around World War II when maps began being made showing villages close together on both sides of Nassau Bay rather than having them scattered widely across both shores like they do now. After much research it was determined that Rocky Hill Road actually connects Great Neck Village Road junction directly with Sandy Hook Drive - thus providing definitive proof that Rocky Hill Rd./ Route 117 never really crossed Sandy Hook Dr..!

In 1784, the British decided to move their military base from Governors Island to Fort Orange on Long Island so that they could better monitor the New York coast. In 1814, General Harrison moved his army from Boston to Westchester County and began invading New York City. He needed troops to help him take over Manhattan and he found them necessary at East Rockaway Point because of its strategic location between Staten Island and Brooklyn Heights. In 1825, General Lafayette arrived in New York City with 4,000 soldiers and ordered all of the Native Americans living in Upper Manhattan (now Downtown Brooklyn) to leave or be executed. This caused many of them to flee into the woods around East Rockaway Point where they continued living until after World War II when they were finally removed by the United States government.
