East Rockaway is a small town in the borough of Queens, located on the east bank of Long Island. The population as of 2010 was 8,853. East Rockaway was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624 and became a part of Queens in 1898. In 1922, the town merged with neighboring Garden City to form what is now known as East New York. The name "East Rockaway" comes from the location's protected status as an archeological site. Archeologists have found evidence that human beings were living in this area as early as 12,000 BC. The first European to visit this area was Giovanni de Tomaso, who sighted it on July 4th, 1524 while sailing from Venice to Cuba. Upon his return trip he submitted a report about his discovery to Queen Elizabeth I of England and included sketches of the fortifications around the island which he had seen on his voyage. In 1624, two Dutchmen named Cornelius Huygens and Hendrick van der Sar came across land that would later be called East Rockaway. They built a cabin there and started trading with local Native Americans for goods they could not get from further upriver. In 1635, Van der Sar sold some of his land to English settlers for £3 per acre (about $127 today). Initially these settlers did not use the area because it was too swampy for farming but soon developed into one of Queens' most important commercial areas due its close proximity to Manhattan and New York Harbor. By 1765 however, many English families had moved out of business because they could not get reliable water supplies from either source so they abandoned their homes and businesses in East Rockway along with other towns in central Queens during King George's War (1689-97). Nonetheless, developers continued trying to improve access to water so that new industries could develop such as shipbuilding or manufacturing since it would provide more jobs than farming or trade could ever do alone. This led to increased development pressure on already struggling communities like East Rockway which were forced out onto long stretches of barren terrain lacking both trees nor any natural resources whatsoever unlike nearby Jamaica or Staten Island where people still farm today thanks to subsidies from wealthy landowners! In 1810, Captain Nicholas deGrasse became the first European to see East Rockaway when he sailed from Verrazano's Bay into what is now Brooklyn Harbor. After his trip, EastRockaway became known as "the most northerly point within reach of New York City." During the Revolutionary War, East Rockaway played an important role as a staging ground for operations by both sides. In 1776, British troops burned down Fleming's cabin; however, he rebuilt it soon afterwards. De Grasse also used East Rockway for disembarking troops during the war. In 1814, following construction of the Holland Tunnel under Manhattan Bridge (then called Ferry Road), traffic through the new connection increased demand for goods transported eastward from Brooklyn via Staten Island and then across Lower Manhattan to New Jersey via Wall Street or Jersey Avenue. As such, there arose anew interest in developing land along with nearby Westchester County around what is now Midtown Manhattan because of this new commerce corridor. In 1825, George Washington agreed to lease 1/4 acre (0.16 km2) of land at present-day 117th Street and Third Avenue inEastrockaway for $5 per year with no right of renewal granted until 20 years had passed; this donation formed part of today's Adams Boulevard public square near Midtown Manhattan’s Rivington Square train station). The Village decided not to build anything on this tract because they were “metaphorically” bound by Washington’s gift but did erect some fenceposts which still stand today outside NY State Archives at Foley Square in Midtown Manhattan! This event helped spur development throughout adjacent areas which we can see today Examples include Morningside Heights (northwest), Battery Park City (southwest), Lincoln Center (northeast), Gramercy Park (east)…. Today these neighborhoods are home to some world-renowned companies like Google®, Facebook®, Apple®, Macy’s®, Starbucks®….. etcetera! All these businesses started up here because people wanted them here! Development has always been about making things accessible so that everyone can have access!

East Rockaway is a peninsula located in the Eastern Townships of New York City. It was annexed by Brooklyn in 1853 and became part of East New York, an inner borough of Brooklyn. In 1898, it became part of Queens following the creation of that borough.
