After Girdy's closure, it is believed that handgun sales stopped entirely withinEastRockaway(Ritchie). This abrupt change may have been due to fear from organized gangs who had become powerful after prohibition ended (Fletcher). However, despite this increase in gunfire throughout the city center during these years- no major incidents took place until 1924 when two gunmen burst into Girdy's grocery district near US 1/ ambition highway . One gunman shot three people before turning his weapon on himself; however this didn't cause any serious injury(Hutchinson). At around this time- crime rates began decreasing overall although homicides did rise slightly annually(Healy) However, by 1934 homicide rates had decreased below previous levels again leading some officials to believe that guns may have played a role therein(Dixon). As recently as 1967 there were only five shootings reported withinEastRockaway limits; however by 1984 there had grown six shootings every month with four occurring between midnight and 5am

As shops closed down around 1990 due to economic decline in the area, residents voted to reincorporate their town into Queens in 2000 vote which they did with new name "East Rockaway". Today's economy revolves around healthcare services and small businesses but some longstanding businesses are still active including Eastern Shore Boatbuilding & Kayaking which has been around since 1896; Captain John's Seafood who serve up fresh fish from local waters; Atlantic Yards reconstruction project provides jobs for locals; Old Navy operates out of a former clothing factory on Roosevelt Road;and two primary schools - one serving students from kindergarten through eighth grade and another for pre-kindergarten through second grade - continue to operate despite budget cuts announced earlier this year by state education commissioner John King Jr.. There are several parks located within walking or biking distance of East Rockway including Everglades Park (15 minutes away by bike), Hewlett Park (25 minutes away by bike), Ridgewood Commons (30 minutes away by bike) and Pinehurst Woods Preserve/Beach House Estate (~40 minutes away by car). Other nearby attractions include Governors Island Casino & Racetrack (25 minutes away), White Sands Missile Range (@35 minutes away), Fordham University (@45 minute distance) and Jamaica Bayou Preserve (@50 minute distance).

East Rockaway is a borough in the New York City borough of Queens. It is located on the east side of Long Island, bordered by the Bronx to the north and west, Staten Island to the south and east, and Brooklyn to the southeast. The population was 22,553 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now East Rockaway were Dutch traders in 1624. In 1627, English colonists from England founded a trading post onpresent-day Dongan Hook in what is now East Harlem. The area around present-day East Rockaway was part of Westchester County until 1814 when it became part of Queens County. In 1764, John Jay created two townships - one extending along present-day Atlantic Boulevard (now called Roosevelt Avenue) from Jamaica Bay all the way to what is nowSTATen Island; and another extending along present-day Park Boulevard (now called Laurel Highway) from Hempstead Harbor all the way to what is nowBrooklyn Heights. On February 14th, 1765, both townships were merged into one village known as Newtown which was renamed New Brighton three years later on December 7th. This village had a population of just over 100 people but quickly grew due to transportation connections it made with other villages throughout Queens and Brooklyn as well as with Newtown itself where goods could be sold directly or transported across Long Island Sound for sale in Manhattan or Williamsburg Ferry Terminal on Staten Island
The first Europeans to visit the area were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew on January 15, 1493. The Dutch explorer Abel Tasman sighted the coast of what is now East Rockaway on December 16, 1714 while sailing from Amsterdam to New York City. The first permanent English settlement was made at Oyster Bay on Long Island in 1764 by Lieutenant John Smith. In 1810, the town of East Rockaway was established as a rural village within the Town of Hempstead. It was annexed by New York City in 1898.
