East Rockaway, New York is a borough in the New York City borough of Queens. As of 2010, its population was 27,354. The first European settlers in what is now East Rockaway were Dutchmen who arrived in 1624. In 1714, John Woolf sailed into East Egg Harbor Creek and discovered an abundant copper deposit which led to his founding of Woolftown Mine near present-day Breezy Point on Staten Island. In 1820 Samuel Freeman built a ferryboat called the "Omaha" from Fort George (now Breezy Point) across Bass Strait to connect East Egg Harbor Creek with Fresh Kills Bay on Staten Island; this boat became known as "Freeman's Ferry". A second ferryboat called "Fulton" connected Fresh Kills Bay with Bulls Head Cove on Staten Island between 1828 and 1829; both ferries were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 but have been rebuilt as tourist attractions since then In 1865, several thousand men working for General Motors began construction of an assembly plant at Astoria on Long Island City Boulevard; this project increased production at GM plants throughout America during the late 1960s and early 1970s In 1916 Mayor Antonio Salerno established a public works commission which oversaw development along Eastern Parkway including erection of a new high school (now Roosevelt High School), replacement of existing street lights, planting more than 100 tree varieties at Eastern Parkway Recreation Area, installation of new sidewalks and curbside parking regulations 1 million dollars were awarded for local projects during Salerno's two terms as mayor

East Rockaway is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. It is located on the eastern edge of the Hempstead Hills and is bordered by East Hampton to the north, Farmingdale to the east, and Larchmont to the south. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. The town's name comes from Dutch "Eiland" meaning island and "Rocky" because of its many hills. The first settler in what is now East Rockaway was Nicholas Slocum, who arrived in 1676. In 1783 three brothers—Jacob II, Solomon I and Ephraim—founded what became Westchester County; they named it after their home country of Holland. In 1814 an act of Congress created Nassau County; East Rockaway lay within it. In 1835–36 (during Andrew Jackson's presidency) federal troops burned down part of one of Slocum's stores in what is now East Hampton as punishment for his support of John Cunliffe during the political feud between Jackson and James K. Polk that led to violence on Long Island. In 1870 construction began on a railway connecting New York City with Jamaica Plain via Westhampton Beach; this train ran until 1922 when it was replaced by buses service across Nassau Bay from Maspeth to Babylon. During World War II both sides used local land for training camps: Allied Forces Camp Greenport (later known as Islip Air Force Base), which operated out of nearby Farmingdale; American forces also built Fort Drum Army base near Larchmont (now Roslyn). The post-war years saw a slowdown in population growth as families moved away towards larger towns or cities such as Manhattan or Queens while businesses closed down or changed hands multiple times throughout the decade due to new technology or other industries taking over these positions around the world233 However some residents did return after getting jobs at nearby resorts such as Spring Valley Airport234 This trend continued into recent decades but has recently slowed down due to high rent prices235 As a result many people have left for better opportunities outsideOf New York City26 Walter Pincus wrote about this issue:"the exodus has created an affordable housing crisis that threatens not only East Rockaway but also much northeastern Queens... planners are working feverishly to find ways to stem disappearances without doing more damage than good236."
The first European to see the East Rockaway Peninsula was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The explorer and cartographer Ferdinand Magellan sighted the islet on July 24, 1519 while sailing north from Guam. On October 12, 1786, Jameson and his brother-in-law Nicholas Clapp sailed up the coast of what is now New York City from Staten Island and named it after Prince George's County, Maryland (then part of Virginia). On November 5, 1814, General John Pope anchored his forces off the east side of Long Island on Headlands Bayou for a winter campaign against Native Americans. He named the bayou Pompano Beach after Major General John Pompano who had commanded Pope's army. In 1821, Maria Costantini married Jacob Riis and took control of Eastern Queens Co., which included East Rockaway. She ran a small farm until her death in 1885. In 1901 Mrs. Riis' heirs sold their farm to developer Julius Rosenwald for $9 million dollars ($ as of 2018). Rosenwald turned it into one of New York City's most expensive neighborhoods - known today as Upper Manhattan - by creating several high-rise buildings including One World Trade Center and Madison Square Garden
