East Rockaway is a borough in the New York City borough of Queens. It was created on May 1, 1898 from parts of what are now Brooklyn and Staten Island. In 2007-2008, plans were made to demolish part of Eastern Parkway which forms much of eastern border of the borough with Brooklyn; this led to public outcry and eventually resulted in a moratorium on demolition until further notice. On March 17th 2009 Mayor Bloomberg announced his intention to approve a plan which would see 1/2 million square feet (121000 m²) be built on former Citi Field site adjacent to where present day Shea Stadium is located within the borders of EastRockway Borough Hall Plaza - this will create over 5100 jobs directly or indirectly while also providing $365Million dollars in economic development over 10 years creating thousands more jobs statewide across New York City alone! Even though opposition immediately arose all over Greater NYC due primarily to concerns about gentrification - mayor Bloomberg’s decision stood – ultimately 1/2 million square feet (121000 m²) will now be developed within Borough Hall Plaza’s boundaries without any threat or impact on existing communities or businesses! East Rockaway, New York is a small town located in the eastern tip of Long Island. It was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 and became part of the English colony of New Netherland in 1664. In 1815, East Rockaway became part of the new United States after the American Revolution. The population peaked at over 10,000 in 1920 but declined to 8,500 by 1940. However, since then it has seen a gradual growth with about 9,000 residents as of 2010. The town is named for an old Indian rock outcropping called "East Rookery" which was situated on what is now Sunrise Highway. The first European to visit this place were two brothers from Holland who were traveling through New Netherland on their way to Boston when they saw a large rock protruding from the ground and realized that this was no ordinary cliff- face. They named the outcrop East Rockaway after one of their hometowns in Holland - Rookery meaning Cliff or Mountain Top (Roeckhout). In 1624, Jacob Zeeves and Hendrick Kieft came across these same rocks while exploring what is now Oyster Bay and decided to settle there instead because they had more land available than where they originally lived - something that wasn't common at that time because only those who owned manors could own land. The original family home which still stands today was built near present day Oyster Bay lighthouse. After years of construction and hard work by Zeeves and his men, the ranching community began expanding into what is now East Rockaway during the early 1800s when farms began being acquired along Sunrise Highway eastward towards Utica (now Valhalla) on Long Island Sound. This area was initially known as "Netherlands Town" due to its location close to both Dutch Reformed Churches (now Utica Cathedral) and Dutch Fort Nassau (later renamed Fort Orange). But soon enough people started calling themselves "EAST ROCKAWAYERS", based on their location within easy driving distance of most major towns on Long Island including Westchester County's Yonkers Heights and Rye Brook Village as well as all manner of commercial centers like Farmingdale, North Smithfield etcetera! The first school in East Rockaway opened its doors back in 1876 just north of present day Main Street with twelve students enrolled! And although there were other schools throughout history operated by various organizations such as Episcopalians/Anglicans/Methodists etc., it really wasn't until after World War II whenEastRockawaySchool District No 1was formedwith an elementary school (grades PK-8), middle school (9-12), high school (13-18), business center & post office located on Main Street that things truly took off! But despite all these advancements over time; many aspects about life here remain constants like our love for baseball & ice skating; our friendly locals who are always willing to help out; & our great sense of community spirit!!
