East Rockaway is a small village in New York City, located on the east side of Long Island. The population was 5,708 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Queens borough. The village of East Rockaway was founded in 1873 by German immigrants and their descendants who had moved from what is now Hamburg, Germany to escape religious persecution. The name came from a ridgeline that ran along the eastern edge of Long Island and its namesake was an early settler named "Rockaway" because he could find no other place to grow food. The first post office opened in 1875, and school began in 1876. In 1898, East Rockaway became part of Queens Township and originally voted Republican until 1943 when it switched to the Democratic Party. Since then it has always been a reliably Democratic stronghold. Today, East Rockaway features a small shopping center with several convenience stores, a few restaurants/cafeterias, and one large bank branch (the only one on Long Island). There are also some homes scattered around the village - most being single family detached homes which were built after World War II when prices for land near highways became prohibitively high.

Henry de Montresor, 1st Duke of Westminster (1547-1624), was a statesman and member of the English Parliament. He was also the son of Sir Nicholas Montresor, 2nd Baronet and Lady Elizabeth Howard. He became duke in 1621 when his father's title became extinct. In 1597 he married Lady Jane Seymour, daughter of King Henry VIII's sister Catherine Parr. They had two children: Prince Edward and Princess Sophia. In 1598 he succeeded to his father's peerage and acquired lands in Essex County, New York; these included East Rockaway on Long Island Sound. In 1600 he purchased from the Dutch West India Company an island called Mauritius in the Indian Ocean off Nassau County, New York for £200 sterling. The island served as a summer home for him and his family until 1625 when he moved it to East Rockaway on Long Island Sound where it remains today. The Montresors were one of the most prominent political families in England during the time period they lived there; they had several members elected to Parliament between 1597-1600 including their son Henry who sat as Member (MP) for Essex from 1621-1624 with no interruption until his death in office three years later at age 54 years old. His wife Jane also served multiple terms in Parliament before her death in 1628 at age 62 years old; she is buried at Westminster Abbey alongside her husband and siblings Nicholas, Lady Jane and Sir Nicholas Montero who inherited their father's titles upon their mother's death some weeks after her own coronation as Queen of England on 25th July 1509 – becoming only the second couple ever to rule both countries simultaneously (the first being Mary I and Philip II). Henry de Montresor is considered one of English history’s great patriots for playing a leading role during both world wars by donating many millions dollars towards repairing damage caused by American forces fighting against Nazi Germany while living abroad; furthermore he has been honoured with numerous awards including being made an Officer of Honour by HM Treasury in 1992 followed five years later by election as a Fellow Of The Royal Society having been appointed Honorary Treasurer Emeritus thereof since its foundation in 1892
In 1821, the town of East Rockaway was established on what is now the east side of Long Island. The town developed out of a small group of farmers who decided to settle in this area because it was isolated from other parts of New York. In 1828, East Rockaway became part of the newly formed Town of Hempstead. The first store in East Rockaway opened in 1830. By 1840, there were six stores in East Rockaway and one post office. The first school was built in 1840 and served grades K-12. During the early 1800s, there were only a few people living in East Rockaway and most residents came from nearby Farmingdale or Hempstead. However, by 1850, there were over 100 residents living inEastRockawayandone school had been built by that year. In 1861, the first train arrived at Atlantic Terminal which allowed for easier trade with other parts of New York City. In 1865, the first hotel was built inEastRockaway and it continued to be used until 1971 when it closed down due to lack of customers.
