East Rockaway is a borough in Queens, New York City. It was created on November 1, 1898 from part of Hyde Park. The population was 23,711 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from its location at the eastern edge of what was then the County of Manhattan. The borough is bordered by Queens to the south and west, Brooklyn to the north, and Staten Island to the east. The river forms its eastern border and forms a natural line separating East Rockaway from Midwood/Woodhaven in Brooklyn. According to the 2000 United States Census, there were 21,786 people living in East Rockaway Borough—19% of all residents in Queens. African Americans constituted 18% of all residents while Hispanics made up 25%. Irish Americans made up 3% of all residents while Italians made up 9%. European American makeups ranged from 2% to 10%. As of 2006 there were no major languages spoken by more than 20% of any resident population count within East Rockway's borders: English only dominated at 30%, though Spanish also has small populations (1%) here as well as Haitian Creole (2%). The borough takes its name from two prominent families who lived here for many years: The Smiths and Mackays. Their home park still stands today next door to John F Kline High School; it is now called "East Side Park". In 1898 Mrs. Smith donated her lot on which she built an apartment building that still stands today- this block being known as Mrs. Smith Boulevard or simply "Smith Boulevard". Today's building actually predates Mrs.'s donation making it one of just a few buildings still standing in full original condition within District 7 across three boroughs that originally comprised Greater New York City- most notably Lower Manhattan including Chinatown and Times Square - until recently with several demolition projects now ongoing! Street namesakes continue throughout these boundaries as do businesses or landmarks associated with either family which can be traced back centuries old such as West Side Market where groceries are still sold today even though it once straddled both sides of Central Park South! In 1907 Mr., Ludden & Son started a men’s clothing store on Atlantic Avenue between 178th Street and 179th Street which became one of America’s first department stores open to women; later becoming Macy’s flagship store before being closedtered again into Men’s Department Stores across town during WWII because military rationing halted production

In recent years, East Rockaway has seen some growth and development as it becomes an attractive place to live and work. On the east side of Rockaway Peninsula, near what is now East Fishkill Road and its predecessor, Court Street, was laid out in 1784 by General James Clinton. The site for the town of Hempstead was chosen in 1786 and construction began on a gristmill on the east side of the peninsula. A sawmill and gristmill were built on both sides of Court Street. The first store in East Rockaway was started by Isaac Jacobs in 1803. The population of East Rockaway increased rapidly from around 100 in 1800 to over 1,500 by 1830. In 1835, some residents voted to secede from New York because they objected to Governor John Jay's pro-slavery policies. In 1847, some residents voted to rejoin New York when it became known as the United States of America. The population continued to grow until it reached 3,000 by 1860; however, during that decade there was significantSTRUCTURAL change due to timber cutting operations conducted along the eastern coast by sailboats and whalers . . .
