Ammunition has a long and varied history in East Rockaway, New York. The area has been home to ammunition manufacturing for centuries, and today the industry still plays an important role in the community. The first ammunition factory in East Rockaway was built by Nicholas Demarest in 1792. It was located on what is now Seventh Street between Ocean Parkway and Atlantic Avenue. Demarest manufactured artillery shells, shotpelling rockets, and other munitions. His factory was one of the earliest to produce firearms, both handguns and rifles. A second Ammunition factory was established by John Fenton in 1824 on Third Avenue between Fifth and Sixth Streets. Fenton manufactured rounds for muskets, pistols, cannons,and other firearms. He also produced shotgun barrels and stocks. In 1828, Samuel Colt founded Colt Firearms Company on First Street between Park Place and Fourth Avenue. Colt began producing firearms as part of his business venture with fellow pistolsmith Elijah Pinkney. Colt’s shotguns were soon popular among law enforcement officers and militaries around the world. His company also developed the first successful revolver ever made – the American Rifle – which became known as America’s favorite weapon! In 1851, Eastern Railroad constructed a line from New York City to Kingston Upon Thames (now Toronto). As part of this project, they built a tunnel under Second Street in East Rockaway that served as their ammo storage depot until 1909! Today there is a small museum dedicated to ammo history located inside of this historic tunnel!

In May 2009, Mayor Bloomberg announced that he would make East Rockaway an open-source city Led by Citizen Governance - an idea inspired by his predecessor Rudolph Giuliani's work on Mayor Bloomberg's Open Data initiative - which will allow residents and businesses access to city data for research and innovation purposes. The mayor also announced plans for $75 million over five years to improve public transportation options in East Rockaways including new buses and trains as well as repairs to existing infrastructure. In addition, he committed $5 million each year until 2024 for community development projects like playgrounds and libraries in areas that have seen little crime or economic development since prohibition ended two decades ago

East Rockaway is located in the town of Hempstead on Long Island. The community was founded in 1847 by Dutch settlers and was known as "Hempstead Point". It became part of New York City in 1898. In 1922, the eastern end of East Rockaway was annexed by Queens, while the western end remained a separate municipality. In 1986, the eastern and western ends were reunited to form one municipality.
