Dunkirk is one of five towns in Suffolk County and part of the New York City metropolitan area. The town was first settled by Europeans in 1664 as "Dunscombe", after Sir John Dunkirk, 1st Baronet, who had been knighted for his role in the Battle of Breda. In 1792, during the American Revolutionary War, Dunkirk abandoned its allegiance to Great Britain and sided with America. In 1814, Assemby Township (now part of Farmingdale) was created from parts of Dunkirk and neighboring villages. On July 26th, 1815 General James Kapp's Division under Brigadier-General Israel Putnam attacked and captured Fort George at Kingston Gorge on Long Island's southeastern tip; this led to a strategic victory for America over Great Britain that helped secure independence from British rule. On September 25th, 1815 Kapp's Division again attacked Fort George; this time they were successful and drove out all British defenders. The fort served as an important military post until it was destroyed by Indian warriors in 1776 during their campaign against Major-General David Hunter's forces at Ossining Heights near present-day Riverhead on Long Island Sound. By 1800 Dunkirk had about 350 residents including about 100 farmers living on land that now includes much of what is today the Town Of Dunkirk beachfront enclave along the Eastern edge ofLong Island Sound between Islip Harbor to the north and Shelter Cove to the south.. By 1850 there were only 45 residents remaining within what are now boundaries oftownship Parkland east sideof Main Streetand west sideof Water Street whileable housing developed primarily around present day Broadway Beach Blvd., Westbrook Avenue & Dunkshire Road before incorporation into new borough Queens following local referendum in 1898 which approved merger with Brooklyn due to increased population growth & political power attributed to newly formed Borough Queens seat at Manhattan’s then 2nd most populous city center
