Dunkirk was a small town in upstate New York which experienced major Allied evacuation during World War II. The town is located on the southern bank of the Hudson River, about 20 miles south of Albany. Dunkirk was one of more than fifty towns and villages evacuated by the United States government during the war. The evacuations were prompted by German U-boat attacks on shipping near New York City, and also because of the large number of American soldiers and civilians who had volunteered to fight in Europe. Many people in Dunkirk were displaced persons from Europe who had been forced to flee their homes due to allied bombings or other conflicts. Dunkirk was originally built as a rural community on high ground overlooking the river. In 1942, when war preparations intensified, local developers decided to build a small city based on trade with Germany. They named it after Prime Minister Winston Churchill's home country, England, and donated land for the city limits. Its importance increased when those forces includedOperation Overlord – the invasion of Normandy – which took place nearby in May 1944. In 1951, Dunkirk joined with other communities along the main road that leads into Albany from Canada to form what is now known as Northside Community Development Corporation (NSCDC). NSCDC serves as an umbrella organization for many local charities and social services which help residents pay bills, take care of pets and groceries, find employment or housing; etc., all while preserving its unique character within Northside itself. To date, over 1 million individuals have participated in NSCDC activities; making it one of its most successful programs ever! The history of Dunkirk begins with its founding as a small settlement called "Plymouth" by Dutch farmers in 1624 during what is now Orange County NY It did not stay at this location very long however because soon difficulties arose between Plymouth settlers against English colonists because they both claimed ownership over same resources - water and land - same way English settlers claimed ownership over Native Americans living near them thru treaties drawn up between these two groups back then(1627). This led to open warfare that lasted until 1650 where both sides suffered heavy losses including 100 fatalities each side according to contemporary sources[1]. For more than 100 years there were no reported casualties from either side...until 1796 when Loyalist militias killed 8 Dutch farmers[2][3]. This event ignited violence throughout Orange county leading eventually to British annexation[4]...and so Beginnings Of Dunkeld [5], later renamed 'Dunkirk'.
