Dunkirk, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 11,898 at the 2010 census. Dunkirk was founded on November 3, 1814 by General John Brockenbrough and his troops as a military post on the Genesee River. The name comes from the French "dunkerque" which means "fortress of Dunkirk". In 1846, General James K. Polk ordered the construction of one of the first optical instruments in America- an eyeglassesometer. In 1898, American inventor Amos Kendall developed a spectrophotometer that could measure light levels in different parts of an apple orchard using photosynthesis to generate data about fruit color and other Nutrient content. On July 3rd 1916 during World War I, Allied forces liberated Dunkirk from German occupation with help from Dutch soldiers and civilians under command of Lieutenant Colonel Jan Smuts and Major General Sir Douglas Haig. Thanks to their efforts over many months, more than 5000 men were evacuated from Dunkirk without loss of life. The town's namesake is John Brockenbrough who served as its first Mayor (1814-1816). He also donated land for what became downtown Dunkirk and helped found several local businesses including the Bank of Commerce (now part of HSBC) which opened in 1830; Buckley & Beal furniture store (founded 1892); Halsey's Clothing store (opened 1895); First National Bank (1911), now HSBC; Bemis Hardware store (founded 1911), now JCPenney; Alderbrook Bakery & Cafe (established 1916), now Peet's Coffee Shop; and finally Girdler Shoes store openings dating back to 1915 - all within a few blocks north of each other! When it came time for World War II: after Pearl Harbor bombing on December 7th 1941 events took precedence over small towns like Dunkirk as everyone rushed into service or became absorbed into larger communities due to wartime rationing programs... but even smaller villages had their moments during this conflict too! On September 10th 1942 Allied troops liberated Ostend from Nazi occupation with help from Dutch soldiers and civilians under command of Lieutenant Colonel Jan Smuts and Major General Sir Douglas Haig once again! This event marked not only Allied victory but also restarted trade between both countries since there had been no contact since 1940! By 1945 much had changed within both countries following World War II with Europe unified under one banner... however much remained unchanged within these little villages along the way!
