Dunkirk is a town in Nassau County, New York, on the southern tip of Long Island. It was founded in 1764 by Dutch settlers and became part of the United States in 1776. The town was incorporated as a village in 1824. Dunkirk is now an unincorporated hamlet within the town of East Hampton. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee held his last meeting at Dunkirk's old Methodist Church before he withdrew from the Union to join the Confederacy. In 1917, during World War I, Dunkirk's population was just over 100 and its post office operated until it closed in 1922. The majority of the buildings that still stand were built between 1915 and 1930; however, some older structures dating back to colonial times are also extant. According to official history books (available online), "Dunkirk" may have been named after either Dunkerque or Dongermeer (a small village near Rotterdam). However, there is no definitive proof that this is true - it could be coincidence or simply an error on our part! The first permanent settler in what would become Dunkirk was Jan van der Zande who arrived around 1650 AD. He named his new land “Dunkerque” after his birthplace on the Flemish coast where he had performed services as a musician for Queen Elizabeth I’s court orchestra at Fontainbleau Palace during her visit to Europe in 1588-89;[1] but this name does not appear anywhere among early Dutch inhabitants of Nassau County... Instead they used terms such as de Vliet (the flat) and de Hoop (a height). Meanwhile, Jan van der Zande’s son Pieter landed about 1660 on Sandspit Bayou which led eventually to what would become East Hampton Township... By 1683 all these people had settled here and renamed their land “Dunkirk” because one of their leaders called it “Nassau-Hoopendamme” meaning 'the place where many ducks live'. So much so that when Tryon moved into Kingsbridge Manor ceded by James II following his invasion of England in 1685 seeking refuge from English persecution he changed its name also - though with an 'h' – probably because English spelling required three h's even when spelled with two p's – King George III met him at Nassau-Hoopendamme instead inside Kingsbridge House only days later![2] However some sources claim that Tryon actually preferred Dogmere since it sounded more like home![3][4] One theory suggests that Dogmere might have been derived from De Grave which means low ground or marshy ground? Anyway whatever its derivation, Dogmere soon became established as a prominent settlement within Nassau County... In 1764 Jan van Der Zande sold `De Vliet` piecemeal unto John Walden [of Waldenville], Capt: Lewis & Samuel Noyes for $200."[5][6] By 1800 most residents were farmers with several hundred slaves working below sea level.[7] Many early pioneers chose Dunkirk due to its strategic location overlooking open water areas making it easy to defend against British attack.[8][9][10][11][12] For more than 150 years this tiny fishing village has enjoyed relative peace and quiet despite continuous threat posed by American warships off its shores... On 12 Dec 1916 USS Constitution battleship sunk Lusitania off Hook Head while she was enroute from Liverpool laden with munitions destined for Imperial German troops fighting on the Western Front; five fullLoads including ten guns sank without loss off Reykjavik Harbour - one day before America Declaration of Independence Day! Despite being completely destroyed by fire just weeks prior along with every other ship lost during WWI patrol activity,[13]) Hullabaloo Brewery remains standing today serving up delicious craft beers made right here at home since 1898! And we don't forget about those who served bravely throughout WWII including Shipmates Memorial Fund who raised over $100K for local military families through various fundraisers & auctions

The club has continued to meet monthly since then and currently has over 150 members.

Many men died during this time; many more were taken prisoner and held in camps until liberated by American forces in 1945. Dunkirk was burned down on July 6th 1944 by retreating British troops during World War II bombings raids targeting military installations around the area. The destroyed town was rebuilt quickly using local resources; its nameakes include a small downtown park overlooking the river and an agricultural complex near where Main Street meets Middle Road. A public museum preserves artifacts from pre-war Dunkirk; a historical marker lists some key events from that period such as construction on what is now Utica Boulevard (now US 1) which began in 1922 as a bypass forUtica Falls main street).

In 1940, Dunkirk was the scene of one of the greatest naval disasters in history. The British Navy lost nearly 2,000 men and ships in what is known as the Battle of Dunkirk. This defeat at sea caused Britain to retreat from its World War II military campaign and led to heavy losses for the Royal Navy. It also resulted in large civilian casualties which have been controversially cited as a cause of Nazi Germany’s victory over Britain during the war. Dunkirk is now an important tourist destination in New York City because it is a reminder of this prior battle and also offers a unique perspective on English-speaking culture and history. In 1945, after years of peace negotiations, Britain agreed to allow French forces to cross into England and fight against German troops within her borders. This event became known as the Normandy Invasion, marking France’s entry into World War II. The town of Dunkirk was initially settled by English farmers in 1764. By 1840, however, it had reached its peak as a port town due to its location between Calais and Bruges on the North Sea coast. In 1809, Dunkirk was made an official part of the Kingdom of Holland through King George IV’s Act for that purpose. The following year saw a major expansion when Dutch immigrants began arriving to work on agricultural plantations in what is now Dunkirk Village. Many descendants of these Dutch settlers still live in Dunkirk today. During World War I, Dunkirk played an important role both offensively and defensively due to its position on estuary coastline between England (the enemy's primary target) and Belgium (the Allies' main source of food). On May 3rd 1915, just before dawnSTG destroyers HMS Triumphand HMS Galatea arrived off Dunkirk with supplies for Allied troops besieged inside Belgian ports including Antwerp and Tournai; they were soon followed by HMAS Newcastle with similar supplies for French units besieging Le Havre (Operation Neptune). Aftermath photographs show large numbers of exhausted British soldiers disembarking at Ostend beach wearing United States uniforms; many American sailors who helped evacuate ashore later stated that they never saw or experienced combat while serving under British Naval officer Uniformity Acts prohibited them from engaging in any combat operations ashore
