Dunkirk, New York is a small town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. Dunkirk is located on the east side of the Niagara River and is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The community started as a small farming village in 1824. It grew rapidly during World War II because of its strategic location on the water's edge near barges used to bring goods up and down the river to General Motors plants in Buffalo and other locations. In 1944, Dunkirk became an important embarkation point for U.S. forces fleeing Nazi Germany following Operation Overlord; over two thousand Americans were transported from there to liberated France.
