In 1803, Dunkirk was the site of a skirmish between American and British forces. The battle ended in a victory for the Americans, who were able to capture two British cannons. In 1814, Dunkirk was visited by Commodore John J. Thompson during his maiden voyage as commanding officer of the U.S. Navy's Squadron Vereeniging; he ordered the construction of a lighthouse at the town's entrance to commemorate this event. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E Lee invaded and besieged New York City from May 1-July 14th. On July 12th, Union General Nathaniel Pakenham arrived at Fort Erie with an army consisting of 5 regiments of artillery, 4 miles south of Dunkirk and within cannon range of the harbor city's walls. Pakenham ordered his batteries to open fire on Confederate soldiers inside the town limit; this resulted in over 130 casualties for both sides (including 11 civilians), including many women and children who took shelter behind fences or in houses until morning when they could escape unharmed. Aftermath: More than 100 buildings were destroyed or damaged and up to 2,000 men were killed or wounded (the largest single casualty among military engagements in that conflict). On October 15th 1870 disaster struck when an ice storm caused much damage to property throughout New York City; it is said that one thousand people lost their lives due to freezing temperatures alone that day alone. Dunkirk experienced its peak population growth around 1900 as immigrants began moving into what had been farmland near the port town limits; these new residents occasionally encountered hostility from locals who saw them as competition for jobs and housing opportunities which they lacked opportunity to attain through traditional means such as education or work experience. By 1930 there still remained about 10% native English speaking residents in the town limits while almost all other inhabitants spoke either Dutch (45%) or French (75%). As immigration decreased over time due primarily to economic reasons rather than political ones following World War II, English became more dominant among local residents within limited community boundaries outside of organized tourist experiences like downtown Dunkirk beach/marketplace/cafeteria etc., remaining more prevalent on social media websites like Instagram where images are often shared amongst locals & tourists alike

Dunkirk is one of five towns in Monroe County and is part of the Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The town was first settled by Europeans in 1795 as a result of an attempt to establish trading posts along the then-new Erie Canal. The town name comes from Dunkelwijk on the Dutch side of the canal, where Dutch traders had been forced to disembark for fear of being captured by British forces during their Revolutionary War campaign against England. The early settlers were farmers who prospered based on their production of corn, wheat, rye, potatoes and other crops. By 1836, Dunkirk had become an important stop on the Canada–US border due to its location on both sides of the lake and its trade with Canada for goods such as lumber and fish. When Niagara Falls became known as "the most dramatic waterfalls in North America" during World War II because Allied troops successfully defended it from German aggression while trapped behind enemy lines after invading France in 1940, Dunkirk quickly came to be known as "the most devastated town in war". In May 1945, following Japan's surrender and capitulation after World War II, more than 90% of Dunkirk's residents died from bombing raids that month alone; over 60% perished within 24 hours after bombings began that day. In 1946–47, when New York Statehood was becoming a reality following years of struggle between northern Republicans and southern Democrats over who would take controlof New York City upon statehood – or whether Gotham would remain under Democratic rule – Dunkirk’s mayors led local efforts to build a memorial museum honoring all those lost in WWII including nearly every resident who had resided there before hostilities ceased: men (more than 80%), women (almost 50%), children (almost 20%), homosexuals (at least 10% since repeal), military personnel (approximately 3/4ths male) killed or missing in action since Pearl Harbor… nearly every family member […] A few months later [in] September 1947,[1] Mayor John Pappas declared “Dunkirk Remembered” open to visitors at his library which still stands today across First Street from Main Street where many businesses used to operate: banks & Trust Co., National Legion Post Office #2[2], Masonic Lodge No 521[3], United Patriotic Fund Store #716[4], St Patrick’s Catholic Church […] In 1947 also two new cemeteries were opened which are still active today: Cemetery No 1 off Elmira Rd near junction with I-81 eastbound & Cemetery No 2 just west side Of Interstate 81 southbound about 8 miles EAST OF DUNKIRK On October 16th 1948 when American troops landed at Normandy Beach they parked their tanks right next door our high school
