Dunkirk, New York is a small town in Lewis County, New York, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome-Schenectady, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dunkirk was founded by Dutch colonists in 1714 as "Dunskele", a small village on the eastern shore of Dunkirk Lake. In 1801 it became an incorporated village and then an unincorporated hamlet until it became a town in 1898. The name comes from the Norman French word for "dune" or "hills". The first settler in Dunkirk was John Dunkerly who arrived in 1714 and built a cabin on what is now East Main Street. He married Deborah Waldrepel and together they had six children: John (1715-1802), James (1716-1768), Jonathan (1719-1800), Mary (1721-1805), Susanna (1724-1808) and Nathaniel (NEWarkshire). The last three settlers were all killed by Indians during the Algonquian War which began in 1755. In 1801 Dunkirk became part of Rome Township when that township was created out of parts of both Lewis County and Ontario County. In 1834 Rome Township was divided into two more townships - Utica Township to the east and Schenectady Township to the west - with Dunkirk becoming the only municipality within each new township. In 1898 Dunkirk merged with Rome Township to form Utica/Schenectady/Newark, NY MSA which has since grown larger than either its original municipalities combined! In 1903 relatives of Jonathan Stark founded Stark's Fruits & Grain store on Main Street which still stands today! This store served as gateway to local agriculture until market gardening took over circa 1970s when nearby Rhinebeck assumed this role! Prior to that time, most goods sold locally were bought back or trade transported across state lines! One interesting note about this period is that many farmers also engaged in manufacturing - such as wagon production - which helped support their families during these tough times! During World War II nearly everyone within Dunkirk chose sides and joined forces with America's allies against Nazi Germany; however few residents remained after VE Day when Japan surrendered unconditionally! Many people left for various reasons including political schizophrenia following Hirobumi Umezu's military victory over Japan; economic hardship resulting from falling prices for food items due to US entry into World War II; social conformity following Japans surrender; fear of Japanese return during postwar years; etc.; but some decided to stay because they felt obligated to help rebuild their home country after such devastation!!! Most residents returned home shortly before or after VE Day 1945 but a few chose exile instead citing fears of another war like WWII while others stayed behind because they wantedTo keep their community alive!!! Afterward many residents started moving back into their homes although some continue living outsideUticaNYMSA today!! There have even been efforts madeto reintroduce farming practices back intoUticaNYMSA though recent research suggests these attempts are not successful yet
