The town's history can be traced back to 1714 when Dutch colonists founded it on what is now the eastern bank of the Hudson River. The first settlers were Flemish Protestants who had fled persecution in Europe. Over time, they bought land around Dunkirk Harbor and developed it into an agricultural community. In 1821, Congress passed an act that made Dunkirk an incorporated city, and growth continued until 1945 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and coastal towns across America werebombed. In 1944, after numerous bombings raids against Allied targets in America by Japan, Congress declared war on Japan. With no food available to support troops stationed overseas and little hope of reinforcement arriving in time, many Americans turned to their local grocery stores for supplies early in 1945. One store owner named Harry Smith decided to open a small shop near his homebase at 6th Avenue and Park Boulevard (now Roosevelt Blvd.) In just a few months he had become one of America's leading suppliers of foodstuffs to military bases all over Asia Pacific Territory (AOT). By late 1945 Smith's store was serving more than 10,000 troops stationed throughout AOT including Okinawa; Guam; Saigon; Manila; Bangkok; Jakarta etc., making him one of America's most successful small-town grocery store owners during its wartime period! It wasn't until 1949 that Harry Smith sold his business to Alfred Pritchard who renamed it Alfred Pritchard’s Discount Grocery Store Incorporated after himself while retaining some ownership rights over the original store building at 6th Ave./Park Boulevard (now Roosevelt Blvd.). This new company continued operating under this name until 1969 when it merged with two other discount grocers - Wamsutta Bros., Incorporated (later known as Wamsuta) and Price Mart Corporation - resulting in Price Mart Corporation’s purchase by Kroger Company effective July 1st 1969.(1) From then on Price Mart Corporation operated as "Pricemart", continuing its tradition of providing high-quality groceries at reasonable prices to soldiers stationed all over AOT.(2) During its long history Pricemart has been home to many famousfamilies such as Koch brothers (1927-present), Malone family (1939-present), Hearn family (1945-present), Forbes family (1965-present), Aschebrothers(1978- Present). On November 2nd 1998 Alfred Pritchard died suddenly at age 91 years old due To complications from pancreatic cancer following a long battle with this disease.(3) His wife Mrs.Pritchard took controlofthe company upon her husband's death leaving behind three children - daughter Patty(1977-) marriedto Rick Aschebrothers(1981-) son John(1984-)and grandson Daniel Aschebrothers(1989-) .
