Dunkirk, New York was once a vibrant and thriving town with a population of over 100. However, after the town was burned in 1898, the gun magazines that were located there all closed their doors. The Gun Club at 515 Main Street did not close its doors however; it continued to serve as a meeting place for the local shooting fraternity. In 1906, the Gun Club sold its property to James Fenton and his family who began to operate it as an antique shop. Unfortunately, within 10 years, James Fenton passed away and his son John took over ownership of the store. In 1988, John Fenton sold the store to Dick’s Sporting Goods which operated it until 2003 when it closed down due to economic conditions. However, in 2006, Dunkirk Association acquired the store and reopened it as an antique firearms boutique called Dick’s Armory Museum. currently on display are many guns from throughout Dunkirk’s history including some that have been used in conflicts such as World War II and The Korean War.

This led to production of canals that transported goods inland from Lake Erie through Dunkirk and Buffalo respectively - this initial stage of commercial development remains an important part of local history today. In 1827, Dunkirk became an incorporated village under control of Seneca County with a population of about 350 people - this increased when it became part of Ontario County in 1835 due to growing trade between Canada and America viacanals built along this route by various companies including John Stevens & Sons (ownership later transferred to Canadian National Railway). In 1870, following annexation by Erie County, Dunkirk had a population estimated at 1,200 people; however it reached its current size by 1880 thanks largely to immigration from Germany (the first wave arrived around 1800) – this continued until World War II when most Germans moved westward into other parts of New York state or fled across borders for safety reasons. During that time period there were also large numbers Irish immigrants moving into rural areas throughout North America due as well – these groups would interact extensively together during wartime despite cultural differences which sometimes led to conflict (e.g., during World War I Ireland worked alongside American troops while Germans served side-by-side on the fightingfront).
