Dunkirk, New York was a small town in upstate New York that was the epicenter of the Second World War. The city is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario and was one of the most bombed cities during the war. The attack on Pearl Harbor made Dunkirk an even more important target, and it came as no surprise when Nazi Germany began construction on a large airfield in nearby Beech Grove. On July 25, 1942, three days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, German bombers struck Dunkirk with such force that entire blocks of buildings were destroyed. More than 100 people were killed, including many residents of Dunkirk who had taken to rooftops to watch as their homes were leveled; many others died from burns or injuries received when debris broke through windows to fall upon them. The bombing also left behind a massive fire which continued to burn for weeks after the attack. In total, more than 150 buildings were damaged or destroyed in this raid. It has been said that it may have been because of this fire that British troops first became interested in using anti-aircraft guns (the Bofors 40 mm gun) in combat against Nazi bombers during World War II. In 1945, after Japan's surrender and the end of World War II, Allied forces vacated Dunkirk and its surroundings following Operation Overlord; all evidence suggests that almost all civilians – save for those still living within range of German bombs – had either fled or been evacuated by then. As a result of these events and other factors such as strategic bombings throughout France which targeted industrial areas including Paris and Lyon – both towns lay deserted for weeks after liberation occurred on May 7th 1945. This long period without human life being disturbed is known as "The Great Gun Freeze". A number of truckloads full of munitions arrived at Dunkirk from Beech Grove overland beginning on October 3rd 1944; however due to bad weather conditions these shipments never reached their destination and only amounted to about 10% of what was eventually unloaded at what is now known as Cinque Terre naval harbour (now part Of Cherbourg). Although official numbers do not exist there are reports suggesting that up to 400 tons worth munitions may have been unloaded here covertly between February and April 1945 alone... including mustard gas shells which contaminated local water sources! "There can be little doubt," writes historian Dr Christopher Browne "that much sensitive material went uncollected during [the] 'Gun Free Zone'" Due largely to lacklustre planning by both belligerents - notably Bomber Command - vast swathes of Europe remained uninhabitable until well into 1946 after months or yearsduringwhich virtually every house/building/village got bombarded includingsmall French town Dunkerque which lost 50%its population overnight due topersonnel losses caused by RAF raids."

Dunkirk experienced significant damage during World War II as a result of Allied bombing raids which killed more than 1,200 people and destroyed over 100 homes. During 1945–1946 efforts were made to rebuild with aid from the United States government through Operation Crossroads – which included construction of a new port administration building known as "The White House". As a result of these efforts, over 12% of all jobs created in New York State between 1945 and 1949 were related to post-war reconstruction projects such as Dunkirk

During World War II, Dunkirk was one of many towns along the Irish coast that were targets for bombing raids by German Luftwaffe planes; on 15 May 1944 RAF Bomber Command made their first raid on Dunkirk when two Halifaxes dropped incendiaries on Market Square causing extensive damage includingto three churches and two homes; five people were killed outright and many more were injured.
