Dunkirk is a small town in upstate New York, located just north of the state's capital Albany. The name comes from the Dutch word "duck" and "kirk," meaning "church." At one time, Dunkirk was a major port on the Hudson River, with shipbuilding and fishing industries becoming dominant after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. In World War II, Dunkirk became an important embarkation point for Allied troops as they moved into Europe to fight against Nazi Germany. The town experienced significant damage during World War II, but it has since recovered and is now known for its art community, set among rolling hills near Lake Ontario. The town was founded in 1781 by farmers who came from New Amsterdam (now part of Manhattan). It was originally called Haverhill because of its location at the headwaters of what is now Harlem River. The first post office opened in 1785. In 1824, Dunkirk incorporated as a village. Despite this early success, economic decline led to residents moving away during the 1830s and 1840s for lack of opportunity or because of military service opportunities in nearby Albany or Troy. In 1865, when Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived at Buffalo Bayoneta to lead his army through New York State towards Richmond Fields outside Syracuse, he ordered his cavalry troopers to dismount and march through Dunkirk to make their presence felt before leading his forces onto battle plains two miles eastward at Orchard Heights along Rensselaer Creek where General Lee's Confederate Army had been defeated three days earlier that summer at Gettysburg across Pennsylvania Avenue opposite Fort Mifflin on July 3rd 1863 while under Federal command! One can only imagine how overwhelming must have been Grant's appearance hereabouts - especially given that every house within a five-mile radius stood either abandoned or unoccupied! During Prohibition many businesses closed their doors due to prohibitionism; however some such as Bootlegger’s Bar still operate today albeit without liquor license! After repeal many people returned home but some chose not to return until times were better; meantime various housing projects were erected throughout downtown which continue up until present day including: The Onondaga County Courthouse Annex (1941), Stroud–Holloway House (1963), United Church Building (1968), State Capitol Annex (1991), City Hall Annex (1996) – all now part of Downtown Dunkirk Historic District! In 1951 local resident John Fenton started using air conditioning for his farm equipment yards so he could keep it cool during hot weather; soon others followed suit with over 100 households subscribing by 1955! Today there are over 350 households subscribed and all systems run smoothly thanks again to our amazing city fathers & councils who did what we couldn't even imagine when starting this great endeavor back in ’51...lol

Dunkirk's economy primarily relied on agriculture until after World War II when it began to grow as a result of manufacturing opportunities available nearby due to new technology plants being set up within commuting distance from Dunkirk. During and after World War II, many people from Dunkirk worked at Manhattan's garment factories which were located just outside the town limits then adjacent to Yonkers and Mount Vernon Square; these factories produced some of America's best-known products such as denim jeans and T-shirts for American consumers. Settlement around downtown Dunkirk gradually diminished during postwar years as highway construction proceeded eastward into what had once been farmland; however, some small businesses continued to operate until about 1970 when commercial development resumed along Route 22/ Southern Boulevard/ Northern Expressway (now I-87) which bypassed Dunkirk completely making it an almost ghost town today save for a few abandoned homes scattered around its once busy main street center where several restaurants now operate under various names including "The Old Mill" or "New Holland".
