It is the smallest town in Erie County by land area and has the smallest population of any township. Dunkirk was first settled in 1785. In 1814 it became part of the Town of Dunkirk and again in 1836 it became a village. On February 14, 1899, Dunkirk incorporated as a city. The townships of Albion and Clinton were annexed to Dunkirk on November 3, 1911; these two townships also had an overall population of 1,851 as of 2010 census. The last time that all six townships together had a population below 1,000 was on December 27th of that year when Albion had 798 and Clinton had 593 residents; both villages ceased to exist because they were no longer within the borders of Dunkirk proper. On January 25th 1920 the Borough (northwest section) of Dunkirk merged with Syracuse City to form new Syracuse Township which contained only part of what is now Dunkirk proper including its downtown core (the eastern section still remains separate).
