Dunkirk, New York is a town in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first guns in Dunkirk were made by George Washington in 1777 during the French and Indian War. In 18th century, cannons were built for Fort Erie to protect against British attacks. In 1814, Major General Anthony Wayne's army besieged Fort Erie and captured it after a six-week siege. American forces then burned all of the cannons within the fort walls. From this event on gun barrels became popular in North America as they could be easily transported and used for defense purposes without fear of being lost or destroyed. Rear Admiral John Jellicoe's flagship HMS "Queen Elizabeth", commanded by Commodore Hyacinth Smithson led a counterattack that destroyed part of the convoy and forced its escape into English waters Reuters reported as many as 191 merchant vessels were sunk during this engagement with only one British ship being captured alive: HMS "Victory". On September 3rd 1940 after three months hard campaigning RAF conducted raids against German ships anchored off La Manche which resulted in five ships being sunk including five transports carrying troops destined for Normandy beachhead where they would join forces with American units under General Eisenhower to fight Nazi Germany’s “Wehrmacht” Army-type tanks and planes. At 00:00 BST on September 4th 1940 Air Vice Marshal Trafford Leigh-Mallory initiated Operation Dynamo which called for all Allied airfields along the UK coast to be used as fighter strips due to Luftwaffe aerial threats against England from Spain On October 10th 1940 Captain Robert Hargrave RNVR took command of 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade Group (Canadian Expeditionary Force) consisting Of 2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI), 1st Battalion Ulster Constabulary (UK), 2nd Battalion Scottish Borderers (SBS), 3rd Battalion Princess Louise Rifles (PALS) from Royal Artillery Regiment at Le Havre Quebec Canada landed at Dieppe France with orders to establish fortified positions around Grande Borneux before moving inland towards Dunkirk Harbour where their brigade group would land together with other units forming II Corps Ninth Army commanded By General Montgomery Commander Tenth Army located between Paris And Strasbourg Germany To support these operations elements from First Canadian Armoured Divisional Headquarters veteran tankers Bill Beattie Drummond commanding No 7 Girdle Glasgow Scots Lowland Fusiliers Gordon McCready commanding 6/7 AntiTank Battery No 21 Troops From 5/6 Canadian Engineers Units disembarking at Le Havre Quebec received no arms or ammunition so set out building themselves up using what materials they could find setting up strongpoints inside civilian housing estates around Dieppe harbour until relieved by Second Canadian Armoured Divisional Headquarters arriving on November 8th 1940 There was little food available so rationing started immediately Officers were given rations starting at 25 pounds per week men then 50 pounds plus 15 days leave each month After six months officers got their own ration pack If an officer died while serving he was buried with full equipment

After the war ended, much of this area served as suburban development with few remaining structures from wartime service other than a small army barracks used by local police officers until 1968 when it closed down due to lack of use and vandalism by residents. However, some aspects such as roads and infrastructure have been preserved including a replica bridge over Loch Ness which allows pedestrians to walk between Dundalk and nearby Ferry Ford
