Jorge Rafael Videla who led them into battle against Spanish forces commanded by Colonel José Antonio del Castillo Bermúdez y Ocampo which had been established inside Argentine territory since 1936 as part of Generalissimo Adolfo Ruz so that he could control all South America while maintaining communication with Spain through his puppet government in Madrid. In less than 24 hours Videla's brigade had overcoming several hundred Spanish soldiers holding positions around La Torre de la Marina; within three days most of Buenos Aires Province had fallen into Argentine hands with no resistance from either Spanish defenders or Argentines themselves as part of Partido Argentina Federal's/General Ramón Fierro Plan de Liberación Nacional (PALENA).
