Dunkirk is a small town in the Town of Dunkirk, New York on the southern tip of Long Island. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is one of two villages in Nassau County that are part of the larger village of Islip. The other village is Hempstead, and it shares borders with Southampton to the south and West Babylon to the north. The first mention of Dunkirk can be found in 1664 when Sir George Downing purchased land from the Indian Chief Noquetochek for £5 per acre (about $140 today). With this purchase, Downing became one of the proprietors of Islip Manor which he dedicated to public use as an open air academy for young gentlemen between 1668-1684. In 1797, during America's Revolutionary War, General James Clinton landed his forces at Dunkirk with orders to drive British troops out. He had only 3 cannon and no ammunition but he managed to repulse a numerically superior British force led by Admiral John Adams who called upon Godspeed! As it turned out, Clinton's outnumbered forces were unable to conquer or even break through British lines and they returned home without any military victory at all; instead they were humiliated and their morale damaged goods back home. Dunkirk experienced its biggest tragedy on July 20th 1944 when German U-boat "Kapitänleutnant" Franz Kappen killed over 100 Allied seamen while operating off Dunkirk beachhead during Operation Dynamo? This cataclysmic event forever changed not only Dunkirk but also World War II as a whole.?

In 1957, Dunkirk's first high school opened for students grades 9 through 12; it was later renamed John F Kennedy High School after then-President John F Kennedy. In 1969, local residents voted to annex neighboring Milton into their town so that they would have more room to grow farming crops and add new homes onto their small community while also benefiting from nearby shopping malls and other amenities (the annexation was rejected by Oneonta).
