During World War II, Dunkirk played an important role as one of two towns in upstate New York (the other being Niagara Falls) that were not bombed during Japan's bombing campaign known as "Operation Overlord." On July 5th 1944 Allied troops landed at Normandy beachhead after weeks of fighting; within days they had liberated France from Nazi rule through Operation Overlord which began on June 6th 1944. A depot for ammunition storage was built at Dunkirk along with a hospital to care for casualties caused by air raids on September 15th 1944 which destroyed much property including much cultural heritage including churches, libraries and homes; however over 1/3rds of all patients who needed hospitalization were discharged without treatment or died within three months afterwards because there was no medical evacuation available for them due to wartime shortages). As a result Of these strategic airstrikes on moderate-sized towns throughout mainland Europe both residents made very hard decisions about how to protect their homes during what was only going to be brief moments interruption in their everyday lives but also left behind tangible reminders that they truly did have something special happening right outside their door... even if it didn't always feel that way!
