At the time, Dunkirk was only a few miles wide compared with modern-day Manhattan and had almost no infrastructure other than an old lighthouse (now known as Saint John's Hospital). In 1942, during World War II, Dunkirk was again threatened when German submarines began attacking shipping near Canada's seaward coast. With little warning or opportunity for defense, many ships were sunk or damaged within minutes of hitting port including two HMCS Winnipeg which resulted in over 160 fatalities and $10 million in damages. In 1898, Dunkirk became a borough; it merged with four other towns in 1915 to form the new City of Niagara Falls. On July 17, 1938, the city merged with another small community—Olean—to create the current City of Niagara Falls. Dunkirk has been a hamlet since 1698 when Nicholas Forbes built his cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1944, it was evacuation center for the military unit known as "The Third Reich's Führer" which consisted of German soldiers who had been captured at Normandy. A large air-raid warning sign was erected in Dunkirk by local residents to warn them of an impending attack on Manhattan by the Luftwaffe. The sign still stands today and can be seen from Route 9 west of town.
