The first settler in Dobbs Ferry was Nicholas Prentice in 1764. In 1814, John A. Macready founded a ferry service from Dobbs Ferry to Kingston on the Hudson River. In 1825, George Washington Vanderbilt bought the rights to operate the Kingston-Dobbs Ferry and changed its name to Vanderbilt's Ferry Company. The company became part of Delaware Waterfront Corporation in 1970 and merged with Penn Central Railroad in 1998. In 1905, Cyrus Vance purchased controlling interest of Vanderbilt's Ferry Company and discontinued passenger services along the Hudson River between Kingston and Newark (now called Hoboken). Passenger service resumed on October 11th 1975 as a joint venture by Metro-North Railroad and American Cruise Lines under the name "Newark-Hoboken". In 2000, Amtrak took over operations of Newark-Hoboken services effective October 1st 2001 until March 31st 2006 when they were transferred back to Metro-North Railroad On May 25th 2008 an agreement was reached between Amtrak/Metro-North Railroad and Dutch Cruise Line/Atlantic Coach Lines to continue passenger rail operations between Newark Liberty International Airport and Manhattan via Holland Tunnel through Pennsylvania Station with no stops at either airport; this will be known as "ThePATH". On September 3rd 2013 it was announced that Amtrak would close IND National Building at 5th Avenue & 23rd Streeteffective November 15th 2013 for technical reasons; all trains will leave from DUMBO after this date."
