Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was first settled in 1795 by Loyalists from Nova Scotia and hardy pioneers from upstate New York. Dobbs Ferry first became known for its saltpeter mining industry which continued until the 1920s. In 1868, John A. Macdonald made his home here and helped to revive the village after it had declined in the late 19th century. Dobbs Ferry has been a mostly agricultural community since its founding. However, its economy has gradually diversified as manufacturing and other businesses have grown around the area's strengths in natural resources and transportation infrastructure development

Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1792, George Washington and his army crossed the river at Dobbs Ferry to reach Niagara Falls. The settlement around Dobbs Ferry grew up around this event and was named after General John Dobbs (1748-1810), who fought in the American Revolutionary War as a general on the British side. In 1801, when New York became an independent country, Dobbs Ferry became its capital. The first post office was established in 1807; it continued in operation until 1840. The first store opened in 1825. In 1830, a Methodist church was built and remained in use until 1921; it now houses a library. During World War II many people worked for DuPont Rubber Company located north of town on Canandaigua Lake; many of these workers are buried at "Du Pont Circle." After the war ended many people left for different reasons including high taxes and joblessness during peacetime which led to businesses closing down throughout much of central New York State which then created difficult economic conditions for small towns like Dobbs Ferry especially as demand from elsewhere increased significantly with no corresponding increase in revenue or jobs available to support businesses open during wartime periods. Many residents chose to move away following this period of difficulty. However most residents decided to stay because they liked their community's mild climate and friendly atmosphere. Today there are only a few homes remaining from when nearly every family had several.

In 1841, James Fenton began designing a telescope that could be used with binoculars. This telescope was called the Fenton Telescope and it was the first successful telescopic device. By 1875, Charles Ayer had designed a better telescope that could be used with glasses. This called the Ayer Tube Telescope. By 1895, Andrew Wirth had developed a new type of microscope called an oil-cellar microscope which could be use with telescopes and binoculars. In 1921, William Happer developed a new style of microscope known as the Happer-Cummings microscope which allowed users to view objects at different depths within water droplets. In 1932, John Herschel developed a new type of telescope known as the Herschel Tube Telescope which allowed users to spot planets outside our solar system using their own Telescopes!
One of the most famous scopes in history is Galileo's telescope, which was used to observe the stars and planets. It wasn't until the 1700s that other telescopes were created, allowing scientists to see things that wouldn't have been possible with a simple eye-piece.
