The first settlers in what is now Dobbs Ferry were farmers who arrived from England in 1800. They named their community after General William Tecumseh Sherman because he helped drive Native Americans out of Ohio in 1812. In 1825, John A. Dobbs founded a ferry company that allowed trade between New York City and points farther west. By 1830, businesses had been established in both towns and transportation became key to economic growth. The first steamboats sailed through Dobbs Ferry Harbor on May 15th, 1831; this event marked an important step in developing transportation within New York State as well as across America. In 1851, John A. Dobbs built one of the first bridges over the Raritan River; this bridge helped make town more accessible for commerce and development throughout its early years. One of Dobbs Ferry's most famous residents was author Fannie Flagg who wrote her best-selling book Our American Cousin about life in colonial days here before independence was declared (1863). Many other notable locales have been included within Dobbs Ferry's boundaries – such as Stroudsburg which lies just outside its borders on Route 9E and was once home to General George Armstrong Custer’s cavalry regiment during World War I; or Palmerstown which lies just east of town limits on Route 9W and served as home to several dozen families until suburban development moved into place there beginning in the early 1960s – all while keeping intact much of its historical character including prohibition-era prostitution operations that took place behind many homes here until recently! Dobbs Ferry, New York was a town in Lee County, New York, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The town is now part of Utica. The first settlers in Dobbs Ferry were John and Susannah Hodgson who arrived in 1795. There were also two families from Rome who came in 1800. In 1814, the post office was established here with the name of "Hodgsonstown". In 1824-1825 there were two clashes between Native Americans and white farmers near present day Dobbs Ferry about land rights; one resulted in a massacre by the Indians and one did not result in bloodshed. In 1827-1828 George Stephenson built the Erie Canal through this area which increased trade with Albany and Buffalo as well as bringing new settlers to this area. In 1830 Ebenezer Cook built a cabin on what is today's Main Street which became the first store in Dobbs Ferry. In 1835-1836 Amos King opened a hotel/motel on what is now State Street which became known as "King's Inn". In 1840 James Witherspoon founded Witherspoon & Company which manufactured shoes and other items including saddles and horseshoes for horseback riding. After his death his son John took over the business until it went bankrupt during World War I). One of Dobbs Ferry's most famous residents was architect Paul Revere who resided here from 1798 to 1800 before moving to Boston where he helped found The Patriot newspaper group along with fellow patriots Samuel Adams (who later became an American Senator) and John Hancock (a signer of the Declaration of Independence). In 1802 Revere married Lydia Maria Child (daughter of Reverend Obadiah Child) and they had four children: Pauline Revere (born December 16th, 1802), Mary Quincy Revere (born May 14th, 1805), Joseph Warren Revere (born October 12th, 1807), Annabella Maria Revere (born March 22nd, 1809). Post office activity declined after 1850 but still continued locally under various names such as "King's Inn", "Hodgsonstown" & "Erie Mills". By 1870 there were only six inhabitants left living within limits then existing; all others had departed for other parts of America or Canada during that time period according 2
Dobbs Ferry was founded in 1796 by Nicholas Dobbs, a Revolutionary War veteran. The first post office at Dobbs Ferry opened in 1807. In 1830, the town of Dobbs Ferry was created from part of the Town of West Egg and became an enclave within the newly formed city of Rochester.
