By 1830, Pleasants had built a large manufacturing plant at what is now known as 204 Main Street in Dobbs Ferry. From here, he exported his products all over the northeastern United States. Unfortunately, due to unsafe working conditions and the low quality of his product lines, Pleasants failed within several years at his company. However, his legacy lives on and today there are multiple businesses operating in the same plaza where he once stood! One of the earliest firearm manufacturers in Dobbs Ferry was John Roach & Sons Company which was established in 1826. This manufacturer produced pistols and rifles for both internal self-defense and law enforcement purposes. As firearms became more popular throughout America during this time period, Roach & Sons quickly became one of the leading producers ofshooters’ eye protection products available onthe market! They continued producing theseitems until 1861 when they relocated their operations outside of New York City due to increased violence and warfare occurring throughout America ( specifically Great Britain). At this point in time, Roach & Sons’products were no longer being manufactured in Dobbs Ferry; they were being produced elsewhere within America. However, even though Roach & Sons ceased production completely within New York City some years later (1868), their legacy remains with us today as one of Dobbs Ferry’s most significant businesses! Dobbs Ferry is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica–Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dobbs Ferry was laid out by Nicholas Dobbs in 1814 and named for him. The first store in the town opened in 1821. In 1825, the village of Dobb's Ferry was organized and became a part of Dobbs Ferry. The first school in Dobbs Ferry was built on the site of present-day First Baptist Church in 1828. A post office called Dobbs Ferry began operation on July 1, 1830, and remained open until it closed on November 15, 1865. In 1870, an act to create a township passed by the New York State Legislature became effective and included Dobbs Ferry within its boundaries; however, this township did not become operational until 1880. The first officer appointed to it was Ezekiel Chauncy voir dire judge of probate; he served from 1870 until his death in 1888. In 1902, John Hickey became one of the two commissioners that were created to manage transportation within Utica-Rome during Mayor John Wadleigh's administration as part of efforts to improve public transportation throughout the citywide area known then as "theuticanomity". In 1907–1908 a large new mill (now known as Smiths Mill) were built just east of town on what is now Route 9A off Main Street between Sayreville and Utica Springs with plans for them to be one of several mills owned by Adolphus Gibson & Sons Company which would produce flour for local markets all through central New York City before moving production elsewhere around 1915 when market conditions changed so greatly that many mills went out OF THE BUSINESS! This mill complex still stands today but most recently been converted into apartments/condos). Another early development occurred with construction beginning on July 4th 1909 (or possibly earlier)of what later became known as Norwalk High School which housed grades 7-12 along with a small shop/laboratory utilized by teachers for research purposes! This school building still stands today next door to North Park Elementary School across from Interstate 87!!!
