The area that would become Dobbs Ferry was first settled by farmers in 1795. In 1812, Colonel John Dobbs founded what would become Malone Academy which still operates today as a private school with grades Pre-K to 12th grade. In 1825, Joseph Tompkins built a sawmill on the confluence of Mohawk and Delaware Rivers which became known as Tompkins’ Mills. The mill closed in 1873 but reopened in 1916 as an agricultural fairgrounds and fairgrounds restaurant known now as The Meadows Inn & Conference Center. In 1901, when Northern Electric purchased its controlling interest in Malone Telephone Company, it decided to move its telephone line from Utica to Malone so that it could be nearer its customers in Albany and Schenectady. On January 1st of that year, Northern Electric's new phone line opened up at Dobbs Ferry Landing on the Delaware River where it continued until 1978 when it was replaced by a new cable line that crossed over Mohawk River at Peekskill Junction

Dobbs Ferry was one of the most important settlements in upstate New York during the seventeenth century. It was located on the south bank of the Hudson River, about a mile upstream from present-day Schenectady. The site had been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries before English colonists arrived in 1614 and began developing it as a fur trading post. In 1624, Dobbs Ferry became part of what is now Albany County and was incorporated as a village under the name of Gananda. Dobbs Ferry soon became an important stop on the Hudson River trade route. The town grew rapidly and by 1668 it had over 100 residents. In that year, it purchased land east of its current downtown to become what is now known as Schenectady Township. However, at least one notable inhabitant of Dobbs Ferry until its incorporation into Schenectady in 1689 - Jameson (James) Livingston - did not find success farming there and returned to Manhattan after a few years. The town's importance continued to grow throughout the eighteenth century; in 1712, it absorbed another settlement, Johnstown, just upstream from present-day Albany City. By 1750, Dobbs Ferry had 1,500 residents and was home to one of Albany's two newspapers - The Patriot (founded 1753) and The Chronicle (founded 1757). In 1801, following decisive American victory over Britain in Lord Cornwallis'American Revolutionary War campaign against Great Britain near Saratoga Springs in upstate New York - then part of British India - Dobbs Ferry became America's first capital city under the United States Constitution. At that time it also boasted one of its most important public buildings: City Hall (1802).
